Chapter 422 Empty Bed

“You like it when I talk like this?”

Alexander’s fingers brushed her palm in a teasing, affectionate caress.

“Then I’ll say it more often.”

A lump formed in Elena’s throat. At this moment, she wanted nothing more than to grab him and ask, “Why were you with Fiona that day?

“Why close enough to fall asleep beside her?

“When you love someone, don’t you instinctively keep your distance from others?”

“What’s wrong? You seem upset.”

Alexander noticed her mood.

“Nothing. Just tired from the long flight.”

She refused to fight with him over Fiona again. One or two arguments were enough-more would only wear them both down.

Alexander squeezed her hand tighter.

The car pulled up outside the airport, and she climbed in after him.

On the way home, Elena closed her eyes and pretended to rest. Believing she was truly exhausted, Alexander gently covered her with a blanket.

She felt him tuck it carefully around her, yet she had no desire to talk. She feared every word she spoke would come out sharp. Besides, Alexander already had enough on his plate, and she did not want to add to his stress.

Truth be told, she was prone to overthinking-even her anger and sadness came with the weight of worrying about others.

When they arrived home, Evelyn and Walter were still awake.

Evelyn wore a stern expression. “You’re carrying a child. Try not to travel abroad so often from now on. You’re no longer a child, so don’t make the elders worry.”

Elena offered a faint smile. “I understand.”

Walter stepped in to ease the tension.

“Let it be. She’s back safe and sound, and nothing bad happened.”

Elena had told Lucas to keep her kidnapping a secret from Alexander and the rest of the Kingsley family They knew nothing about what she had endured in Morven, believing she had merely gone overseas for a routine business negotiation.

She saw no point in bringing it up; it would only lead to more trouble.

“Grandpa, Evelyn, I’m really tired,” Elena said.

Evelyn’s expression softened. “Go rest then. Are you hungry? I’ll have the kitchen prepare something for you.”

“No need. I’m going to bed.”

With Evelyn’s approval, Elena headed to their bedroom. She heard Evelyn stop Alexander before he could follow her.

“She looks terrible. Don’t you think she should cut down on her work hours?”

“She loves her job. She’d only be miserable staying home all day.”

“You always spoil her…”

Elena shut the bedroom door, blocking out their voices. After taking a shower, she found Alexander already inside the room.

She lay down on the bed. He leaned over to kiss her forehead, then pulled her into his arms, patting her back gently as if comforting a child. “Don’t take what Mom said to heart.”

He assumed she was upset about Evelyn’s words.

In truth, Elena did not mind what Evelyn had said. Evelyn was just being caring, even if her tone was harsh.

It was Alexander who troubled her. She murmured a quiet “Mm” and closed her eyes.

She was physically drained and her head felt foggy. Still, jet lag kept her from falling asleep easily. Subconsciously, she reached out for Alexander’s embrace, only to find the space beside her empty.

She opened her eyes. His side of the bed was vacant and cold.

She had lost count of how many nights she had woken up to an empty bed.

Sitting up, she planned to check the bathroom. As she stepped out of bed, she heard voices coming from the balcony.

Barefoot, she walked over and recognized Alexander’s voice at once.

“My affairs are none of your business.”

“Ryan has been assigned to handle all matters concerning the Scott Group.”

“…Thank you for what you did the other day.”

She did not need to guess who was on the other end of the call.

So that was where he had been all those nights-talking to Fiona?
