Sham Marriage Quit, Real Heiress Strikes Back
Chapter 424 Hospital Emergency
They are too busy doting on each other to even spare me a call.
Elena let out a self-deprecating laugh. Love isn’t always something that brings happiness.

She stretched, ready to head home, when a sudden cramp seized her calf. She cried out in pain, bracing her hands on the desk as her abdomen slammed into the edge. A sharp tightening rippled through her belly.
Her face drained of color. A dull, persistent ache spread through her lower abdomen. Ignoring the throbbing in her leg, she slowly sat back down, heart racing.
She picked up the office phone and dialed Lucas’ number.
Lucas had been about to leave for the day. The moment he heard Elena’s voice, he rushed to her office.
Elena’s face was ashen.
“Take me to the hospital,” she said, struggling to steady her breathing.
The cramp in her calf had faded, and the abdominal tightness was gone, but she dared not take chances. She needed to get checked.
Lucas, inexperienced in such matters, was visibly panicked. He helped her downstairs and sped toward the hospital.
“Should we call Mr. Kingsley?” he asked.
Elena’s hand rested protectively on her stomach. After a beat, she nodded. “Call him.”
Whether to confirm if he was still with Fiona, or simply because she wanted him by her side right now, she didn’t care. She just needed him.
Lucas immediately dialed Alexander’s number.
The phone rang and rang.
No one answered.
Elena’s heart sank.
“Mr. Kingsley’s probably busy,” Lucas said hesitantly. “I’ll try again later.”
“Mm.”

By the time they reached the hospital, it was late. Only the emergency room was staffed.
Elena was wheeled in for an ultrasound. Thankfully, the baby was unharmed. Still, the doctor recommended she stay overnight for observation.
“You have anemia,” the doctor said, his tone serious. “It started early in your pregnancy, but it will only get worse as the baby grows. You need to take this seriously.”
“The fetus is also slightly underweight,” he added. “Stay with us for a few days so we can monitor and improve your condition.”
Elena agreed.
“Where’s your family?” the doctor asked. “Someone should be here with you.”
He’d initially thought Lucas was a relative, but his formal, deferential manner made it clear he was an employee.
“I’ll call them right away,” Lucas said, reaching for his phone again.
Elena stopped him.
“You go on ahead. I’ll make the call myself.”
Lucas had been running around enough for her today. She felt guilty keeping him so late.
“Ms. Sterling, are you sure-”
“I’m fine. I’m the baby’s mother; I’ll take care of us both. Just go. I’ll call now.”
She pulled out her phone and made the call right in front of him. Only then did Lucas leave, reassured.
But the call wasn’t to Alexander. It was to Sophia.
She’d planned to call Chloe, but Chloe was too wrapped up in her new relationship. Sophia was her only option.
“Elena? What’s up?” Sophia’s voice sounded bright, cheerful.
Elena paused for two seconds. “I’m at the hospital. Do you have time to come over?”
Sophia shrieked. “Hospital? What happened? Is my niece coming early?”
“Nothing like that. Just… a small issue. Come over first.”

She added quickly, “Don’t tell Alexander.”

Once, Sophia would have pressed for details. But after everything with Edmund recently, she’d grown up. If Elena said not to tell, she wouldn’t ask why.
Without a word, she hopped into her Ferrari and raced to the hospital.
“Elena! Are you okay?” Sophia’s eyes welled up the moment she saw Elena in the hospital bed.
“Is the little one being naughty? I heard pregnancy is so tough.”
“I’m fine,” Elena said, sitting up.
She explained what the doctor had told her. “They said I need a family member or friend to stay with me. You’re the only one I could ask. Sorry to trouble you.”
“Trouble? That’s ridiculous!” Sophia feigned offense. “I’d be mad if you didn’t call me!”
Sophia was a natural ray of sunshine. Talking to her slowly lifted the heavy gloom from Elena’s heart.
She leaned back against the pillows, sipping the bitter iron supplement Lucas had made her earlier. Her face twisted at the unpleasant taste.
Sophia fell quiet. After a moment, she whispered, “Elena… did you and Alexander fight? Is this because of him?”
She was already mentally choosing sides. After weighing everything, she’d decided: Elena came first. Alexander could take second place.
“No,” Elena said, keeping her expression neutral. “I just didn’t want him to worry. It’s nothing serious, just anemia. He’d only stress for no reason.”
Sophia exhaled in relief. “Thank goodness. I thought you found out about-”
She clapped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide.
“Found out what?” Elena looked up at her, cup still in hand.
Sophia bit her lip, letting out a frustrated huff. “It’s nothing. It’s just… a friend told me she’s seen Fiona going after Alexander nonstop. She’s so annoying. Can’t she stay away from a married man?”

both Elena and Alexander are stupid, they already knew and agreed to be open, honest and trust each other, but instead they repeated the same mistakes which made them suspicious of each other....
