Sham Marriage Quit Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 55

An ambulance was already stationed outside the apartment building.

Firefighters transferred the injured family to the paramedics, and within seconds the ambulance doors slammed shut. The siren wailed as it sped toward the hospital.

"Let's go," Elena said.

This was not the time to argue with Camille about whether she had pushed Sophia.

Elena took Sophia by the hand, hurried to her car, and followed the ambulance at a safe distance, determined to secure firsthand information.

Camille's assistant watched Elena drive off with Sophia and leaned closer. "Camille, aren't we going after them? What if they get the exclusive?"

"What's the point?" Camille adjusted her sunglasses. "Didn't everyone there already say what happened? Drunk husband, domestic abuse, then he set the curtains on fire."

She had no interest in chasing it further.

Stories like this were beneath her. If the new editor had not insisted she get more field exposure and personally assigned her this piece, she would never have shown up somewhere that risky.

"So what do we do now?" the assistant asked cautiously.

As a reporter, she believed facts needed to be verified, but she did not have the nerve to question the Hart family's favored daughter.

"We go back to the office and file. As long as we publish before Elena does, we're fine."

Camille slid on her sunglasses, her heels clicking confidently as she walked away.

Elena kept a steady distance behind the ambulance. They arrived at the hospital within minutes.

The injured were rushed straight into the emergency operating rooms.

It was not appropriate to film at a moment like this. Elena worked for a legitimate media company. Securing exclusive information mattered, but so did professional ethics. Taking photos of critically injured people fighting for their lives crossed a line.

She and Sophia waited outside.

Several other vehicles were parked nearby, all belonging to rival outlets.

The reporters jumped out and rushed toward the operating rooms, cameras raised. Hospital security, summoned by nurses, quickly blocked them.

"Have you people no decency?" one guard snapped. "They're in critical condition. Put the cameras away and step back."

The guards forced the reporters out.

After nearly half an hour with no updates, impatience set in. It was not a headline grabbing national scandal. Most of them decided the eyewitness accounts they had already gathered were enough to write their pieces.

One by one, they left.

Soon, only Elena's car remained outside.

Sophia glanced around. "Are we really still waiting? Everyone else left."

"Let's wait," Elena said calmly. "We don't know the full story yet."

"It shouldn't. It will fade with time," the nurse assured her.

Only then did Sophia visibly relax.

Elena felt a subtle warmth in her chest. Whether Sophia cared because of Alexander or for some other reason, at least in this moment, the concern was genuine.

"Let's head back to the operating rooms," Elena said.

Sophia followed closely, insisting on carrying Elena's bag and equipment.

"I've got it," Elena protested. Sophia is a pampered heiress, she's never done anything like this.

"It's fine. Your hand's injured, and I'm stronger than I look."

Sophia flexed her fist playfully to prove her point, and Elena could not help but smile, allowing her to help.

The operating rooms were not far.

The patients were still inside, so they sat on a bench in the corridor and waited.

Elena checked her phone. Right on cue, Lydia had posted in the department group chat and tagged her directly.

Lydia sent a message, "@Elena, what's the status? Swiftline already published their report. Where are we on this?"
