Sham Marriage Quit Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 56

Through the screen, the questions felt cold and unforgiving.

Elena was no rookie. Lydia's tone did not shake her professionalism.

She typed back.

Elena replied, "@Lydia, the victims are still in surgery. The cause of the fire hasn't been officially confirmed. We're at the hospital waiting."

Less than ten seconds later, another message popped up.

Luna sent a message, "Or maybe someone's using fieldwork as an excuse to slack off? By the way, do we even have a performance review system for off site assignments?"

No names were mentioned, but it was obvious who she meant.

Elena curled her lips in a faintly mocking smile and tagged Luna directly.

Elena replied, "@Luna, I'm at the hospital right now. Want to join me?"

She attached the hospital location. Luna went silent and sent a pitiful emoji instead.

When Elena had first joined Velmora Media, HR had told her there was only one reporter position available. That meant either she or Luna would stay.

No wonder Luna kept targeting her.

Elena ignored the passive aggression and opened Twitter to check Swiftline's official account.

As expected, Swiftline had already published a report stating that the fire was caused by a drunk husband committing domestic abuse and setting the curtains ablaze.

The comment section was in chaos.

[Men are unbelievable. They chase you before marriage, then show their true colors once they've locked you in.]

[So how is this going to be handled? Is marriage supposed to be a free pass for abuse?]

[Can we calm down? There hasn't even been an official statement yet. Where did this outlet get its information?]

At least some users were thinking clearly, pointing out how rushed the report seemed.

Only the people involved truly knew what had happened, and they were still in critical condition. Yet Swiftline had published before any official announcement.

Media reports carried weight. They could shape public opinion and affect real lives.

Elena scrolled expressionlessly. She let out a silent, ironic laugh.

Maybe she had overestimated Camille. Years abroad had not sharpened her judgment at all.

"Alexander!"

Sophia's voice suddenly rang out, startling Elena.

Alexander was standing there. Why is he here?

"I was nearby for something else. Sophia mentioned you were here."

Her smile stiffened.

Of course. This hospital was close to Pinnacle Group's headquarters. Given his health, coming here was not unusual.

She had almost flattered herself into thinking he came specifically for her.

Elena brushed a hand over her forehead, masking her awkwardness. She did not notice the faint flicker of amusement in his eyes.

"How's the investigation going?" he asked.

Relieved to return to work talk, she answered, "We're waiting for updates. If they're willing, I'd like to conduct interviews once they're stable."

Just then, the operating room doors opened.

Nurses wheeled out three beds. One was taken toward the ICU, the other two toward standard wards.

"Sorry, I have to go," Elena said quickly.

Without another word, she hurried after them. Visitors were not allowed in the ICU.

She followed the nurses toward the regular ward. As Sophia instinctively moved to rush inside, Elena grabbed her arm to stop her.
