Sham Marriage Quit Real Heiress Strikes Back novel Chapter 65

Nathan followed Elena's gaze and spotted Alexander across the way. He gave him a small nod, the kind men exchange when they pretend everything is fine.

He opened the passenger door for Elena, helped her in, and even leaned over to fasten her seat belt.

"What are you in the mood for? I'll take you anywhere you want tonight."

It was true what people said, a man who had something to hide suddenly became extra attentive.

"Anywhere's fine."

Elena answered softly, watching Alexander's figure blur in the rearview mirror as the car pulled away.

"Then let's go to that farm to table place you like."

"Sure."

The car moved smoothly through traffic. Nathan noticed the silk scarf around Elena's neck and the outfit she was wearing, something he had never seen before. He recognized the brand. Camille had once asked him to buy something from the same label, and it had not been cheap.

"I don't think I've seen you wear that brand before. When did you get it?"

Elena's heart skipped.

"Oh, a few days ago. Do you like it?"

"I do."

Nathan smiled. The outfit suited her. It made her look poised and quietly intelligent.

She and Camille were completely different types. Elena carried herself with calm grace, while Camille looked innocent on the surface but was far more daring in private. He could not deny that part of his obsession with Camille had everything to do with the heat she brought when no one was watching.

Elena did not care what was running through his mind.

What is Alexander thinking right now?

Her thoughts were interrupted by the vibration of a phone. Nathan's phone lit up on the console. He put on his Bluetooth headset and answered.

Elena could not hear the other side, but Nathan's expression shifted quickly.

"Alright, I got it."

He made a sudden U turn and headed in the opposite direction from the restaurant.

"What happened?"

Elena already had a feeling. It had to be about Camille.

"Camille tried to kill herself." Elena went silent.

Nathan drove fast. He walked ahead once they arrived, moving so quickly Elena had to follow in her heels. Watching him lose all composure over Camille, she felt nothing but irony.

They took the elevator to the fifth floor.

Seeing Camille pale and fragile, Nathan pieced together what must have happened. He sighed and looked at Elena with clear disapproval.

"Elena, you went too far."

Elena looked at him. "You really think I shouldn't have done it? Because Camille rushed her version out first, I was supposed to sit back and let the internet tear that man apart?"

Nathan remained calm. "It's just online backlash. If a grown man can't handle that, what kind of man is he? And Camille's post brought them attention. They could have turned that into traffic, maybe even monetized it with a livestream or something. In a way, she helped them."

Then he added, "Why did you have to take it out on her because of what happened between us?"

Elena actually laughed.

She used to think Nathan was everything a husband should be. Now she understood she had been seeing him through her own feelings.

"You've seen the article. What else do you want? You want me to apologize to her?"

Catherine answered before Nathan could. "Delete the article and say you made it up. Then apologize to Camille."

Inside the room, Camille wiped at her tears. "It's fine, Mom. I didn't handle it well."

Elena ignored the performance and looked at Nathan. "Do you think I should apologize too?"

Nathan glanced at Camille. She looked weak and tearful in Catherine's arms, painfully pitiful.
