Elena selected everything and deleted it. There was not a single word from Nathan worth trusting.
After clearing the messages, she checked the time.
9 p.m.
Alexander had not returned since he left earlier. It seemed he had no intention of sharing the room tonight.
Elena accepted that quickly. She had to go with him to Kingsley Manor in the morning anyway. She turned her phone off again, switched off the lights, and went to sleep.
Half an hour later, the bedroom door opened.
A tall figure stepped inside and stopped by the bed. Alexander looked down at the woman already asleep, a faint, quiet smile forming.
So she can really just fall asleep like that, after everything I've done?
Somewhere between sleep and awareness, Elena felt the blanket shift slightly.
A hand guided her gently to the side. Then a faint, ticklish sensation near her neck.
She instinctively lifted her hand to brush it away, but before she could, her wrist was caught.
Elena's eyes flew open, and Alexander's face came into focus right in front of her as she realized her clothes had already been half undone.
She instinctively leaned back. "Wait... I'm tired..."
She had learned her limit.
Three times before had already been enough to make her reconsider everything.
"Tonight's our wedding night," Alexander said quietly, brushing a light kiss against the tip of her nose, his voice low and steady. "You're just going to sleep through it?"
Elena froze.
He does have a point.
She exhaled softly, gave in, and wrapped her arms around his neck.
Later, Elena leaned against the headboard, her legs still weak, one hand pressing against her lower back as she looked at him. "Alexander, did you lie to me?"
His eyes flickered slightly. "About what?"
"You're not actually sick, are you?"
No one in poor health had that kind of stamina. She was starting to feel like she had been played.
He looked at her evenly. "Does it look like I'm falling apart?"
She shifted all the blame onto Elena.
If Elena had treated Nathan better, none of this would have happened.
Charles let out a cold laugh. "You did it because you felt sorry for him, or because you wanted your relationship out in the open? Do you think I can't tell the difference?"
His voice hardened. "Even if you're legally married, the Hawthorne family does not recognize you. Unless he gives up his inheritance, you are not stepping into this family."
His gaze toward Camille was filled with clear disdain. She's way more calculating than she lets on.
Victoria could not accept it. "That's not fair. Camille has suffered for five years!"
"And Elena hasn't?" Charles shot back. "Camille chose her situation. Elena was deceived by all of you."
He turned to the staff. "Show her out."
The servants moved forward.
Panicking, Camille grabbed onto Charles's sleeve. "You can't make me leave. I'm pregnant with Nathan's child."
The room fell silent.
"What did you say?" Victoria was the first to react, shock turning instantly into excitement. She pulled Camille up. "You're pregnant?"
