Chapter 10
Jack’s woke broke You’re wrong”
We checked all cameras. No sign of her leaving
Jack didn’t hear the rest. He was already in his car, racing toward the factory.
By the time he got there, the fire was out. Just a black, smoking ruin.
A firefighter approached, holding something.
Found this, sir. Only thing we could ID.”
The gold locket. Cracked, blackened, the repaired seams split open again by the heat.
Jack’s hand closed around it. Ice shot up his arm.
“No…”
A young officer glanced at the wreckage. “Fire this hot? She’d be ash by now.”
“Shut up!”
Jack’s head whipped around, eyes bloody.
The officer shrank back. “Just stating facts…”
Jack clutched the locket and ran at the rubble.
He dug through the night, bare–handed, until his fingers were shredded and raw. They begged him to stop. He wouldn’t.
“Show me the body or prove she’s dead.”
At dawn, a detective approached.
“New development, sir. Sarah was brought here against her will. It wasn’t a kidnapping by her.”
Jack stared.
Think back. When you left, was she acting strange?”
The memory hit him like a freight train.
She’d been sitting there. Still. Too still.
