Her voice grated on his last nerve. He slapped her.

She hit the floor, cheek flaming, staring up at him in disbelief. In all their years, he’d never raised a hand to her.

Before she could say more, the door opened again. Police filed in.

“Jessica Miller? You’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder.”

She lunged at Jack, grabbing his sleeve. “Jack! Help me! Tell them it’s a mistake!”

He looked down at her. Bent and helped her up.

Hope flickered in her eyes.

He leaned close, lips brushing her ear.

“Lucky for you, they got here first. I’d have made you suffer. Slowly.”

Her eyes went wide. The blood drained from her face.

The cops cuffed her and hauled her away.
