Chapter 12

Jack went back to the rubble,

He didn’t know what else to do He searched until he wasted away, until he looked decades older.

Margaret found him there.

She took in the sight of her son, broken, filthy, hollow, and her voice cracked between anger and grief.

Look at yourself. When she was alive, you couldn’t see straight. Now she’s gone and you won’t let her rest.

Jack’s voice was empty. She’s my wife. I’m bringing her home.

Wife?

Margaret’s hand shot out. A red booklet slapped his cheek and fell to the ground.

She stopped being your wife the day she signed this.

Jack stared at the divorce decree. Sarah’s photo stared back, calm and quiet.

Momwhat are you talking about?

I found it in the house days ago. She was leaving you, Jack. She was supposed to get a fresh start.

Tears spilled down Margaret’s cheeks.

This is on me. I’m the one who pushed you to marry her. If I hadn’t

Jack couldn’t look away from the paper. Something hollowed him out from the inside.

She’d divorced him.

While he was planning their future, she’d already checked out.

That last time he’d threatened her, she’d already signed. Already let go.

He laughed. Hoarse, broken, desperate. Tears streamed down his face.

Margaret wrapped her arms around him.

Let her go, Jack. Give her peace.

He shook his head, clutching the locket.

He bent and picked up the divorce decree, tucking it carefully into his pocket. Chapter 12
