Quinn stared at his profile picture, thinking he was acting completely irrational today.
How many follow-up appointments had she attended over the last two years?
The times he had actually accompanied her could be counted on one hand.
Since she had to go anyway, she figured she'd let him do whatever he wanted. Having him tag along wasn't entirely useless—he could at least foot the bill.
Seeing that Quinn hadn't refused, Dante's lips curled into a pleased smirk. He grabbed his car keys off the desk and headed out.
Just as he stepped out of his office, his phone rang.
The caller ID flashed Vivienne's name.
Dante frowned. For once, he didn't answer, nor did he hang up. He just let it ring out.
The ringing eventually stopped, but the moment he stepped out of the elevator into the ground floor lobby, his phone began vibrating frantically again.
He clicked his tongue in annoyance and finally answered. "What is it?"
Vivienne's terrified sobs immediately poured through the speaker.
"Dante, I was driving and accidentally hit someone. Please, you have to get here. I'm all alone, I can't handle this..."
"Dante, the family is so aggressive. I'm too scared to step out of the car. I'm afraid they're going to hurt me!"
Through the phone, he could hear a man angrily pounding on a car window while shouting curses, prompting Vivienne to let out another piercing shriek.
"Send me your location. I'm on my way."
While driving to Vivienne's rescue, Dante shot a text to Quinn.
[Something came up at the company. I'll take you to your appointment tomorrow.]
Quinn stared at the new message popping up on her screen and calmly locked her phone.
She changed her clothes and drove herself to the hospital.
She had stopped expecting Dante to actually keep his promises a very long time ago.
At the hospital.
Quinn went through her routine examinations. While waiting for the results of her chest X-ray, a sudden, vicious cramp twisted through her lower abdomen.
Then she signaled with her eyes for Quinn to look ahead.
Quinn followed her gaze. Dante was standing in the billing line.
"You see, Quinn? It doesn't matter that you harbored a secret crush on Dante for seven years, or that you've been married to him for three. The moment I need him, he will always run to me first."
Dante had just resolved the traffic dispute for her. She had cried to him, claiming she bumped her arm against the steering wheel during the crash, tearing her stitches open.
So he immediately drove her to the hospital to get her wounds treated again.
"So what if you're waiting for an appointment? So what if you're miserable right now? I'm the only one he has ever cared about."
"Oh, and about that limited-edition bag... did you really think he bought it just to coax you?"
"The truth is, Dante insisted on buying it for me. I was the one who told him to grab one for you while he was at it. Do you like it?"
Vivienne smiled, her eyes radiating unspeakable malice.
But the furious reaction she expected from Quinn never materialized.
Instead, Quinn simply offered a faint, icy smile.
