"Boss, don't tell me you're actually falling for a married woman?"
Caleb was genuinely horrified by his own deduction.
His boss was a man who usually felt zero romantic emotions. Was he really about to bypass normal dating entirely and plunge straight into a scandalous, homewrecking affair?
Oh, absolutely not. That was a PR nightmare waiting to happen.
When Raymond remained dead silent on the line, Caleb immediately shifted into panic-preacher mode. "Boss, destroying someone's marriage is terrible karma! Being the 'other man' never ends well! Please reconsider!"
Raymond stopped walking. Through the glass doors, he stared at Quinn standing beside Dante, enduring the endless stream of billionaires with a perfectly plastered, polite smile on her face.
His eyes darkened with annoyance.
"It sounds like I haven't given you nearly enough to do this quarter," Raymond said, his voice dripping with freezing menace.
Caleb practically choked on his breath. Between managing the Harbor Heights subsidiary crisis and running Raymond's shadow ops, he was already working 100-hour weeks. He was barely surviving!
"Boss, I take it back! I'm sorry! Please do not give me more work. Do you have any idea how many corporate drones die from sudden cardiac arrest these days?!"
Ignoring his assistant's pathetic whining, Raymond hung up and stepped into the elevator.
Back inside the banquet hall, Quinn had been dragged from group to group, making polite conversation with endless streams of VIPs.
Even though Dante shielded her from the toasts so she didn't have to drink, faking a smile for three hours straight made her facial muscles ache.
Her feet were still sore from the heels, and her stomach was entirely empty.
She was praying for the night to just end already.
Dante noticed the profound exhaustion bleeding through her poised facade. His normally ruthless, unapproachable expression softened into something resembling warmth.
"I'll handle the rest of the networking. Go take a break and finally get something to eat."
Feeling like a prisoner granted parole, Quinn immediately retreated to a quiet table, sitting down and downing a glass of water.
Just as she finally caught her breath, Dante's phone buzzed loudly.
Even though it wasn't on speakerphone, he was standing close enough that Quinn could easily make out the voice on the other end.
