"Can Daddy play with you?"
The boy hugged the dinosaur tighter, silently rejecting the offer.
A wave of defeat washed over Dante.
Old Mrs. Hayes scoffed from behind him. "This is what happens when you do nothing but work all day. See that? Your own child isn't close to you."
A deep surge of guilt gnawed at Dante. He reached out and gently patted his son's soft hair.
"I'm sorry, Leo. I was wrong before. I promise to make more time for you from now on."
Watching this performance, Quinn sneered inwardly.
It was too little, too late. Neither she nor her son needed him anymore.
But with her grandmother present, she couldn't afford to shoot him down verbally. She had to force herself to play the part of the happy family all the way through lunch.
"Quinn, I'm heading back to the country tomorrow. If Dante ever bullies you, you call me immediately, and I'll deal with him!"
The countryside was charming, the air was fresh, and her old friends kept her company. Old Mrs. Hayes vastly preferred recovering there.
Genuinely moved, Quinn squeezed the old woman's hand.
"Don't worry about us, Grandma. Stop stressing over everything and focus on taking care of yourself."
Unused to the estate after being away for so long, Leo grew restless and eventually began fussing to go home.
Seeing this, old Mrs. Hayes said, "Take him home for his nap. I woke up early today, so I need to rest too."
Quinn nodded, said her goodbyes, and led Leo outside.
Dante followed them out. "I'll drive you back."
"Go do your work," Quinn refused. "Raymond is waiting for us outside."
The moment the little boy cleared the front courtyard, he spotted the SUV and excitedly sprinted toward it.
"Raymond!"
