As soon as Yasmine Yates got the call from Vivienne, she rushed straight to the hospital.
Vivienne lay in the bed, pale and drawn. She had lost all her usual glamorous arrogance and looked completely devoid of life.
Yasmine closed the door firmly the second she stepped into the room.
"Vivienne."
Seeing Yasmine arrive, Vivienne propped herself up.
"Yasmine, what happened? Didn't you say Zachariah Zeller would take the secret to his grave? How did Dante find out?"
Yasmine's expression was grim, her tone laced with defeat.
"I underestimated Dante. I thought I had Zachariah's son under control. I assumed that with his boy's life on the line, he wouldn't dare breathe a word."
"But Silas Vance actually went to Silas St. James. In that city, who would dare cross St. James? Only someone with a death wish!"
Vivienne had heard of St. James. Rumor had it he was a ruthless underworld kingpin; killing a man was as easy as crushing an ant to him. To think Dante had pulled in someone like St. James just to uncover the truth.
Yasmine continued, "St. James sent his men to raid the underground casino and bust Zachariah's son out. Once Zachariah knew his kid was safe, he spilled everything."
Vivienne's face drained of even more color. "It's over. It's all over."
"Dante is never going to speak to me again."
Yasmine frowned. "Dante can't be completely devoid of feelings for you. Once you're discharged, try going to see him. Apologize. If you can get him to cool off, maybe he'll forgive you."
Vivienne was a mess. She knew better than anyone that the only reason Dante treated her so well was out of guilt.
Now that he knew she was a fraud, would he even give her the time of day?
The memory of that night—the vicious look in his eyes as he threatened to throw her into Silverpine Lake—was burned into her mind. Just thinking about it made her scalp prickle with lingering terror.
But Yasmine reminded her, "Vivienne, you need to try to get his forgiveness, or this is going to blow back on both the Ambrose and Yates families."
"I heard Dante is planning to terminate his partnerships with both our families. You know exactly what that means."
Vivienne shuddered. Had it really escalated to that level?
No wonder her brother had looked so gloomy and stressed the last couple of days, refusing to tell her what was wrong when she asked.
Dante was actually going to cut ties with the Ambrose family over this.
He wasn't even going to let Yasmine and her brother off the hook for their involvement back then.
