Quinn Yates thought Raymond Moretti would be happy when she offered him a day off.
Instead, his thin lips remained pressed into a hard line, his expression stormy.
She quickly added, "Of course, if you have any other requests, just let me know."
Raymond stared at her for a long time. His gaze made her incredibly uncomfortable, as if the air in the room had grown dangerously thin.
Finally, he broke the silence, his deep voice betraying none of his heavy emotions. "As we agreed, overtime with the kid means extra pay. And that imported asthma medicine—transfer the funds when you have a moment."
Quinn blinked, realizing it was all about the money. Feeling a bit helpless, she pulled out her phone and transferred five thousand dollars straight to his account.
Raymond stared at his screen, his finger tapping to accept the amount in the little red box.
"Thanks. Financial independence is what we agreed on. It's best to keep business and personal matters separate."
He held her gaze and added, "If he comes bothering you again, don't try to handle it alone. Call me."
"It's part of my job description. I won't charge extra."
Quinn was left speechless.
Ignoring her silence, Raymond turned and headed for the stairs.
He paused on the second step. "You said I had tomorrow off."
Quinn nodded, then realized his back was turned and he couldn't see her.
"Yes," she called out. "Take tomorrow off. Come back the morning after."
"Got it."
The man murmured in acknowledgment, his deep voice carrying over his shoulder as he disappeared onto the second floor.
Watching him go, Quinn couldn't help but wonder if he was rushing off to a romantic rendezvous now that he had cash in hand.
She had figured he wouldn't want to come back tomorrow night if he was going on a date.
Which was why she told him to return the following morning.
Men, after all, tended to get cranky when they went too long without a release.
She needed to give him a chance to seek out his rich backer in the Cullinan to satisfy his needs. That way, he'd be much more relaxed and focused on his job.
Back in his room, Raymond immediately texted his assistant, Caleb Jenkins.
[I have tomorrow off. Find a chance for me to meet with Felix Quincy.]
Caleb replied almost instantly: [Understood. I'll check his schedule for tomorrow right away.]
Just as he put his phone away, a soft knock came at the door.
In all these years, she never once considered tracking down his biological father.
That private clinic catered exclusively to the wealthy elite. Raymond was just an ordinary man; there was no way the sample belonged to him.
People always said that kids started to look like whoever they spent the most time with.
Quinn was starting to believe it.
Finishing his drink, Leo looked up with a giggle. "Is it good?"
Raymond replied dryly, "Yeah."
Spotting Quinn approaching, his expression instantly cooled into indifference.
He looked down at the boy. "Go to bed. Don't forget to brush your teeth."
Leo nodded obediently, took Quinn's hand, and headed back to his room.
Staring at Raymond's closed door, Quinn grumbled to herself.
She had given him his money and his day off.
Why was he still giving her the cold shoulder?
