In the middle of the night, Quinn was jolted awake by an urgent knock on the door.
When she opened it, Lydia was standing there, looking frantic.
"Quinn, Leo is tossing and turning. He's whining and clearly in pain. I just checked his temperature—he has a fever."
"How high?"
Quinn asked, already hurrying down the hall toward the child's room.
"101 degrees."
"That's not terribly high. Let's give him some fever reducer first and monitor him."
Just as she was about to step out of the room to find the medication, Raymond appeared at the doorway holding the first-aid kit in one hand and a glass of water in the other.
"Did we wake you?"
Quinn was surprised but impressed by his sharp reflexes. It was a basic requirement for a bodyguard, but still impressive.
Raymond nodded. He had woken up almost the exact second Lydia had knocked on Quinn's door.
"Give him the medicine first."
"Thank you!"
Quinn took the kit and the water from his hands.
The water was perfectly lukewarm. She had to admit, he was incredibly thoughtful.
Seeing both Quinn and Raymond there, Leo seemed to calm down slightly and began to whimper for attention.
"Mommy, Raymond!"
"My head... feels dizzy..."
Quinn stroked his hair, her voice soft and soothing. "Be a good boy and take the medicine. You'll feel better soon!"
The little boy kept his eyes shut tight, his tiny brow furrowed in misery, his long eyelashes fluttering as he struggled through the discomfort.
"It'll take about half an hour to see if the fever breaks." Quinn looked up at Raymond. "You and Lydia should go back to sleep. I'll stay here and watch him."
Lydia left the room, but Raymond stayed exactly where he was.
He pulled up a chair and sat down right next to the little bed.
"No rush. I'll go to bed once his fever goes down."
Quinn looked at him, feeling incredibly grateful once again that she had hired such an amazing bodyguard.
His sense of responsibility alone was worth every penny.
"I thought you were still mad about Tara's phone call."
Quinn ran out of her bedroom with her coat just as Raymond was walking past with the child in his arms.
"Keep up. I'm driving."
Quinn nodded. With Raymond taking charge, she didn't have to panic.
She followed him out, got into the car, and safely held her sick child against her chest.
"It's okay, baby. We'll be at the hospital soon, and everything will be fine."
Lydia had quickly packed the boy's clothes and water bottle and scrambled into the car after them.
Once at the hospital, they rushed him into the emergency room where the doctor immediately drew blood for testing.
The results came back quickly.
"It's a severe bacterial infection, which is why the oral medicine didn't bring the fever down."
The doctor spoke calmly, trying to reassure them. "Don't panic. We'll start him on an IV drip with the proper antibiotics, and the fever will break shortly."
Lydia finally let out a breath. "Doctor, how long after the IV will his fever go down?"
"You should start seeing his temperature drop before the bag is finished. The family can go ahead and handle the admission paperwork now."
Quinn was about to go handle it herself when Raymond stopped her.
