Charlotte saw her parents beside her. Happiness welled up, and she opened her mouth to speak, hoping for praise.
Isaac raised a thumbs–up. His eyes were red as he said, “Charlotte’s the best!”
Grace did not know how much longer her daughter could stay. She steadied herself, stood, and said, “Charlotte, are you hungry? Mommy will make you something to eat.”
The girl’s eyes lit up. “Okay! I like Mommy’s potato beef stew the most!”
She was not actually hungry. What mattered was eating with her parents. That alone made her happiest.
“I’ll make it right now.” Grace wiped away her tears and went into the kitchen.
Isaac picked Charlotte up and followed. “Let’s watch Mommy cook, okay?”
“Okay!”
Grace continued cooking, but her attention kept drifting. She glanced at her daughter again and again.
Charlotte giggled. “Mommy, that’s sugar! Potato beef stew isn’t sweet!”
“You’re right.” Grace laughed softly. “Mommy’s just too careless.”
She kissed Charlotte’s cheek and turned her focus back to the stove.
The three of them filled the kitchen. The parents‘ voices blended with their daughter’s bell–like laughter. The mood felt warm and joyful, yet an unspoken sadness lingered beneath it.
Soon, the food was ready.
They had just sat down when Charlotte suddenly remembered something. Under her parents‘ watchful eyes, she swung her short legs off the chair and ran out with quick, eager steps.
She searched the room until she spotted Dominic. She ran to him and grabbed his hand. “Mister, come eat with us! Mommy’s cooking is super delicious!”
Dominic froze for a moment, then laughed. “Alright.”
She tugged him inside.
When Grace saw Dominic enter the dining room, excitement flickered in her eyes. Her lips parted as if she wanted to speak, but Isaac gently patted her hand. She fell silent.
“It’s so good!” Charlotte said. “So yummy!”
She ate quickly, shoveling food into her mouth.
Isaac reached over and wiped the corner of her mouth. “Slow down. There’s plenty.”
Charlotte nodded. She looked at her father, then at her mother. A bright smile spread across her face. “I am really happy today. Mommy and Daddy didn’t fight, and you both stayed with me.”
Grace felt as though knives were cutting into her heart. Her emotions collapsed, and she leaned into Isaac, sobbing.
Isaac felt the same pain.
“We won’t fight anymore,” he said hoarsely. “Never again.”
Charlotte’s eyes shone. She held out her hand. “Pinky promise!”

Isaac smiled through reddened eyes and hooked his pinky with hers.
Dominic let out a quiet sigh. They had not cherished the child enough before. Love that arrived too late could never make up for what was lost.
What mattered most had never been the fighting. It had always been the parents‘ presence.
After the meal, Charlotte spoke again. “Mommy, Daddy, I feel a little sleepy. I want to take a nap, okay?”
Dominic’s heart sank. He had already noticed how faint her body looked.
