The word “divorce” hit Isabella right where it hurt. She panicked and shouted harshly, “Shut your mouth!”
“Tsk, I won’t shut up. I’m saying it,” Jessica shot back, her eyes lighting up. “Divorce, divorce, divorce. Tomorrow’s a great day. You two are getting divorced…”
Isabella finally snapped. She stepped forward, shoved Jessica aside without ceremony, and walked straight into the house.
Jessica flew into a rage. “Are you serious? We were talking. Why did you put your hands on me?”
Isabella ignored her and went straight to Lilith’s room.
Fear was written all over the girl’s face. When she saw Isabella, she called out softly, “Mommy.”
Dominic was holding her, his expression steady and unreadable.
Isabella walked over and took Lilith from his arms. “Honey, you have to believe me. I know I did wrong before, but I really didn’t side with them today. I was worried about you and Lily. Look at her. She’s scared.”
Dominic nodded. “Alright. I believe you.”
Relief flashed across Isabella’s face. “Then we won’t divorce anymore. Go withdraw the filing at the court.”
Dominic let out a cold chuckle. “Then why did Alexander and his mother show up? Who caused all this trouble?”
Isabella froze.
“Isabella, you don’t have a heart,” Dominic said flatly. “All of this, one thing after another, is the result of your own choices. This time, I believe you didn’t protect them. That doesn’t mean I forgive you. The divorce tomorrow is happening.”
He said it in front of Lilith, leaving no room to soften his stance.
Pain filled Isabella’s eyes, and her resentment toward Alexander deepened.
In a low voice, she said, “Honey, I won’t agree to the divorce. The court won’t grant it either.”
“We’ll see tomorrow,” Dominic replied lightly.
“Daddy, Mommy, can you both go out, please?” Lilith suddenly said.
Her voice trembled, thick with a sob she was trying to hold back.
Dominic was stunned. Guilt flickered across his face, and he stood up and left.
No matter who was right or wrong, no matter the reason, the one who would suffer most was the child.
Isabella held Lilith close, her heart aching. “Lily, Mommy wronged Daddy. Mommy knows she was wrong, but Mommy won’t give up.”
Lilith’s eyes filled with tears. She nodded hard.
“Go to sleep. Don’t think too much. Daddy and Mommy love you” Isabella laid her on the bed, kissed her cheek, then walked out and closed the door.
Once alone, Lilith could not hold it in anymore. She buried her face in the pillow and cried softly.
Before long, the pillow was soaked.
Outside, Dominic sat on the sofa, cigarette after cigarette burning between his fingers. Thinking of Lilith made his chest feel

unbearably heavy.
Jessica sat beside him. She assumed he was upset about Alexander and the others and spoke in a sweet, coaxing voice. “Dom, don’t be angry. Those two are nobodies. I’ll help you blow off some steam later.”
Isabella noticed how close Jessica was sitting. Her eyes widened. She rushed over, yanked Jessica to her feet, and snapped, “Why are you still here?”
