Chapter 166
Isabella sat back down on the bed, her gaze unfocused, her thoughts clearly elsewhere.
Just then, the doorbell rang, jolting her out of her daze.
She hurried to the door. “Who is it?”
“It’s me.”
Recognizing the man’s voice, Isabella opened the door.
Oliver stepped inside and asked bluntly, “How did it end up in a divorce?”
Isabella shook her head, dejected and unwilling to revisit the subject.
Oliver clenched his teeth. “He suggested it, didn’t he? That bastard!”
He had only learned the truth after the court hearing ended and had rushed over without pause. When he saw his sister’s swollen eyes, anger flared in his chest.
Isabella forced a bitter smile. “It’s my fault, Ollie. Don’t go looking for trouble with him.”
Oliver snorted, already plotting his next move.
She read his thoughts at once, sighed, and said, “You can’t beat him anyway. Listen to me, Ollie. Just pretend you don’t know. What happens between my husband and me is something I’ll handle myself.”
Her words struck his pride. Oliver snapped, “You think I’m not on the same level as him? What era are we living in? Fighting and brawling?”
Years ago, he had fought Dominic once and lost.
Oliver cared deeply about appearances, so he told the family that he had stayed calm and had not gone all out. He had spun plenty of other lies as well.
Whenever Isabella and Katherine brought it up in the past, the sisters could barely hold back their laughter.
Now, Isabella had no mood to laugh. She only shook her head, sorrow written across her face.
Oliver sighed. “We have to look forward. Maybe there’s even better scenery ahead.”
She understood his meaning and shook her head again. “The most beautiful scenery is already here. No matter how beautiful the road ahead may be, to me it’s just ruins. I will remarry my husband.”
Oliver’s voice rose in anger. “Do you really have to have him? What if he refuses? What if he marries someone else?”
“He won’t.”
“And if he does? What if? Are you going to grow old alone?”
“Then I’ll grow old alone,” Isabella said without hesitation.
“I love him. In this lifetime, there’s only him. Besides…” She smiled faintly. “My husband has a bit of a macho streak. Even if he doesn’t want me anymore, he wouldn’t be happy if I went to someone else. So I can’t do that.”
What kind of twisted logic is this? Oliver stared at his sister for a long moment before cursing, “Isabella Sinclair, you’re a complete idiot. A big one.”
That evening, after Dominic finished cooking, Jessica skipped cheerfully into the dining room.
