After listening to Dominic’s words, Ezra’s gaze settled into calm focus. The account largely matched the results of his investigation at Caleb’s home.

When Dominic finished, he asked, “How did they die?”

“A natural gas leak that caused a fire,” Ezra replied.

“You didn’t find them?” Dominic exclaimed.

“No. We found no trace at all. Every door and window was sealed, and nearby surveillance cameras recorded no one else entering or leaving.” Ezra laid out the details methodically.

His instincts told him Dominic knew more than he was saying. Even though he personally felt that Adam’s family were no better than beasts, professional ethics demanded the truth.

Dominic joked, “Maybe Wendy came back to take revenge.”

Ezra shook his head. “You really shouldn’t say things like that.”

Dominic laughed it off.

After a moment, Ezra said, “Last time at David’s place, how did you know that child was hidden inside the wall?”

To him, Dominic carried an undeniable air of mystery.

Dominic’s eyes darkened, and he smiled cryptically. “Captain Sanchez, everyone has secrets. Digging into matters like that isn’t very appropriate, is it?”

Ezra paused, then said, “Dominic, you’re a very interesting person.”

Dominic replied, “Honestly, that family didn’t deserve to live. Whoever did it, I’d call it removing a menace.”

Ezra pretended not to hear. He stood and said, “All right. That’s all for today. I have other leads to follow.”

Dominic nodded and walked out with him.

He escorted Ezra and the others downstairs.

As Ezra was about to leave, he turned back. “Dominic, if you uncover any clues, be sure to contact me.”

“Of course,” Dominic said.

Ezra added in a pointed tone, “I’m not referring only to this case.”

Dominic understood, so he smiled and repeated, “Of course.”

At his side, Wendy spoke softly. “Will this cause you trouble, Mr. Fleming?”
