Chapter 404
Before long, the two of them settled into their seats in the theater.
The movie was a foreign sci–fi film, fast–paced and visually striking.
Dominic watched with full concentration.
Lydia, however, found it hard to stay focused.
“Dom, I think I’m a little sleepy…” she whispered, her gaze drifting to his profile.
He glanced at her and replied casually, “Then take a short nap.”
“Okay.” She leaned against his shoulder and wrapped her arms around his.
“Hey, you…” Dominic frowned by instinct, then relaxed.
Lydia smiled with a hint of mischief. “Dom, you wouldn’t begrudge me your shoulder, would you?”
He chuckled. “Alright. Go ahead.”
With that, he returned his attention to the screen.
Time passed at a slow, unhurried pace.
All at once, Dominic felt the fabric at his waist lift, followed by the chill of a probing finger. He looked down and met Lydia’s slightly unfocused gaze.
The theater lights were dim, and her expression remained unclear, but her breath carried a faint warmth.
“Dom…” she murmured. Her fingers moved with practiced ease and edged closer.
A hand closed over hers.
Dominic leaned toward her ear and spoke in a low voice. “There are people around. Don’t get reckless.”
Lydia let out a disappointed sigh.
After that, she found no further opening. The movie ran for nearly three hours. She remained restless, while Dominic followed every scene with unwavering interest.
Lydia felt a surge of irritation. ‘Dominic, you’re hopeless. Who goes to the movies with a woman and only watches the movie? What a foolish straight man.‘
Despite her inner indignation, she kept smiling. “Dom, let’s go. Dinner’s on me.”
Only then did she realize the time. It was already 5:00 p.m.
“Alright,” Dominic said.
They went straight to a nearby smokehouse.
November had brought a chill to the air, and the restaurant bustled with diners.
After placing their order, Lydia sighed. “Dom, why do foreign movies always seem to have better special effects than ours?”
“It comes down to budget,” Dominic replied. “On a technical level, many domestic experts can produce top–tier effects. But most film budgets get eaten up by cast and crew salaries. That leaves less money for effects.”
Lydia nodded, admiration clear in her eyes. “That makes sense. I used to dream of becoming a director, but I ended up as a lawyer instead. Life really is unpredictable. I wonder if I’ll ever get that chance.”

Dominic looked at her. “There are many things we can’t control, but there’s always a way forward. If you ever run into trouble, tell me. I might be able to help.”
His tone remained calm, and his expression stayed gentle, yet his sincerity came through clearly.
Lydia’s heart gave a small jolt. She almost shared more, but after a brief pause, she brushed her hair back and smiled. “Dom, what kind of trouble could I have? Meeting you is already my greatest stroke of luck. I’ll just go with the flow and chase success
and fortune.”
Dominic understood her answer and smiled. “Is that so?”
Soon, the food arrived, and they ate while they talked.
Their laughter and animated conversation drew a snort from a masked woman outside the restaurant. Irritation drifted from her like a cloud. ‘Laughing so freely, and you still claim loyalty to Lilith? Hmph.‘
Dominic felt a sudden chill crawl up his spine. He glanced back, but nothing appeared out of place, which left him confused.
“What’s wrong?” Lydia asked.
He shook his head. “Nothing.”
Half an hour later, they finished eating. Lydia paid the bill, and they headed downstairs together.
“So full!” Lydia exclaimed once she settled into the car. She rubbed her stomach with a lazy sigh.
Dominic laughed. “Did you overeat?”
She shot him a playful glare. “Smoked food does this to me. The more I eat, the more I want, but I get full fast.”
“I’ll grab you some digestive tablets,” Dominic said.
She thought it over. “Sure, that sounds good.”
Dominic drove to a pharmacy, parked, and went inside to buy them for her.
