“Then I’ll just have to keep an eye on him myself,” Isabella said with a sigh. “Whenever I’m free, I’ll go see him. I have to make sure no one takes advantage of the slightest opening.”
Katherine glanced at her but remained silent.
Isabella clenched her fists and declared, “Operation Win My Husband Back. Success only. Failure is not an option.”
She looked so certain that Katherine could not help asking, “What if, and I mean what if, Dominic gets involved with another woman? Or even… decides to marry someone else? What would you do?”
“What do you mean, what if?” Isabella shot back without hesitation. “That won’t happen.”
Katherine’s tone turned sharp. “Forget whether it will or won’t. I’m asking if it really happens. How would you handle it?”
The question made Isabella’s lashes tremble. She sat motionless, staring ahead, unable to speak. Moments later, tears slipped silently down her cheeks.
Katherine shifted uneasily and pressed her lips together. “Why are you crying?”
Isabella shook her head. A bitter smile curved her mouth. “Kathy, I never imagined that one day I’d be separated from my husband. I love him to my core. Maybe we were together for so long that I took us for granted. Deep down, I assumed we were forever. I thought nothing could break us.
“He’s like air. You grow used to it. You stop noticing it. You forget to treasure it every moment. Then one day it’s gone, and only then do you realize how much it hurts to breathe without it.
“Looking back, I was reckless. Because of certain things that happened, our marriage fell apart far too easily. Even now, I regret it more than anything.”
Katherine gave her a sidelong look. “So you got used to the air and decided you wanted the scent of wildflowers instead?”
“No, no,” Isabella said quickly, waving her hands. Her voice grew firm. “My heart never changed. Honestly, Dom is extraordinary. His looks, his character, his values, everything about him is impeccable. If I walked away from a husband like that to love someone else, I’d be a fool.”
Katherine shrugged. “Who knows?”
“Can you not be sarcastic for once?” Isabella snapped.
“You still haven’t answered my question,” Katherine replied.
“I know.” Isabella nodded. “But what’s done is done. Regret is useless. I have to win him back. Maybe you don’t understand, but every night I need sleeping pills just to close my eyes. I wake from nightmares more often than not. I can’t lose my husband.”
She swallowed, then continued in an eerily calm voice. “If he truly marries someone else, if he truly doesn’t want me anymore, then I… I don’t even know what living would mean.”
The composure in her tone unsettled Katherine more than tears would have. A bitter weight settled in her chest.
Forcing a smile, Katherine tried to lighten the mood. “It’s not that dramatic. When Benjamin died, you cried your eyes out. Eventually you were fine, weren’t you?”
Isabella shot her a glare. “Don’t ever compare my husband to Benjamin. Benjamin was a longtime friend. Of course I was heartbroken, especially since he took a bullet for me. But how could he ever compare to Dom?”
“And you won’t tell Dominic that?” Katherine asked. “There’s nothing wrong with it.”
Isabella huffed. “I don’t want him knowing I cried over another man.”

Katherine sighed. “That’s exactly the problem. Things that could be understood turn into ticking bombs because you hide them. Wasn’t that what happened before?”
Isabella smiled awkwardly. Then something seemed to click. “Oh, right. He told me last time that he suspects Benjamin might still be alive.”
Katherine’s eyes widened. “What? Really?”
