Just then, Everett knocked on Melanie's office door.
'What's wrong?' Melanie asked, noticing Everett carrying something in his hands. It looked like clothing covered by dust bags.
'You have a delivery... It looks like clothes sent over by some high-end boutique. The front desk handed them to me to bring to you.'
Everett had a look of confusion on his face.
Melanie was just as puzzled. Judging by Everett's expression, he seemed to think she had bought these high-end clothes herself, perhaps for some singing engagement.
However... Melanie had absolutely no idea about these delivered clothes.
'Did the person delivering them say who sent them?'
At Melanie's question, Everett shook his head, realizing that Melanie hadn't bought these clothes herself.
'Open the dust bags and let me take a look.'
Following Melanie's instructions, Everett opened them.
There were five garments in total. Among the five pieces, there were two different styles of suits, two distinct dresses, and an evening gown.
And the one thing they all had in common was—they were entirely black.
If Melanie hadn't recognized that all five outfits were from luxury brands, adorned with various exquisite decorations, she would have mistakenly thought someone was playing a prank or that someone needed to attend a funeral.
'Why are they all black clothes?' Everett obviously shared the same question as Melanie. 'But these clothes do look quite expensive.'
Ever since Everett joined the Royce Group as COO and earned Nathaniel Royce's high regard, he had consciously started learning about these high-end luxury goods, both men's and women's. After all, he wanted to be worthy of Melanie and didn't want to disappoint Nathaniel.
In the past, Everett rarely, if ever, had the money to buy those luxury brands. But now, he had acquired a few luxury items himself, so he had developed a certain eye for premium goods.
As Everett asked, Melanie let out a soft smile.
These clothes... if she had to put a name to them, they were compensation—compensation from Preston.
Last night, in a moment of impulse, Preston had torn her black off-the-shoulder evening gown. In truth, the damage to the gown wasn't too obvious, but it had indeed been ruined by Preston.
So, Preston had compensated her with five black outfits all at once. The gown among them was somewhat similar to her ruined one. Melanie guessed Preston probably couldn't buy the exact same piece, so he bought a similar style.
'So thoughtful...' Melanie couldn't help resting her chin on her hand, murmuring to herself.
She had originally thought Preston was so focused on kissing her last night that he completely failed to notice he had ruined her dress.
Her fingertips lightly brushed her red lips. Just as Melanie was involuntarily savoring the memory of that intense kiss from last night, a rush of hurried, panicked footsteps suddenly echoed outside the door.
It was the sound of more than one person's footsteps.
