Elara indeed looked like she had taken a brutal beating, utterly battered and bruised from head to toe.
Preston stood in silence for a moment before his lips parted.
"Do you need me to call an ambulance for you?"
His voice was perfectly calm, flatter than a windless sea.
Tears of overwhelming grievance suddenly welled up in Elara's eyes, an invisible lump forming in her throat.
"...Is that it?"
Her voice trembled the moment she spoke.
Even as heavy tears rolled down Elara's red, swollen eyes, Preston didn't so much as twitch a brow.
"What exactly do you expect me to do?"
His tone remained as tranquil as still water.
Elara let out a sudden laugh.
A laugh tangled with sobs.
"If Melanie had been beaten like this, would you still be standing there so damn calmly?!"
Faced with her hysterical accusation, Preston simply shook his head.
"No one would ever do that to her."
He didn't bother speaking the unspoken condition behind those words:
As long as he was around.
No one would ever dare lay a finger on Melanie.
Seeing that she still had the energy to spout nonsense, Preston turned on his heel to leave.
He had only checked on her out of basic human decency.
"Stop right there!"
She roared behind him.
Meanwhile, by The Statue of Amora.
It was already Melanie's turn, but Preston still hadn't returned.
She had wanted to call him, but her phone had died and shut off.
Standing on her tiptoes, she craned her neck toward the juice stand, scanning the crowd, but there was no sign of the man.
"Miss, are you going to dance or not? If you're not, my boyfriend and I are going in."
She just never imagined running into him on Luna Isle.
Let alone seeing him in glasses.
If anything, she would have assumed he'd opt for gold or silver wire frames—something that fit the stereotypical intellectual professor look.
But these thick black frames...
They actually made him look surprisingly boyish and approachable.
Not that he was old to begin with.
She opened her mouth, about to ask what he was doing here, but before she could get a word out, he beat her to it.
"Let's dance."
"But..."
"It's fine. I'll lead."
He didn't give her a chance to refuse, smoothly pulling her into the rhythm of the dancers.
Yanking her hand away now would be incredibly rude, especially since she still needed to collaborate with him and use his connections to get closer to the York family.
With no other choice, Melanie let him guide her, following his lead as they moved to the music.
