It wasn't just phone calls. Melanie was staring at her messaging app so intensely she was practically burning holes through the screen.
Not a single text from Preston.
"Could it be..."
Her eyes widened.
Was Preston mad at her?
Did he think she was making a scene over nothing, being unreasonable, and acting completely irrational?
Melanie clamped a hand over her chest, a sudden wave of panic washing over her.
"What am I doing? Why am I acting like this?"
She mentally scolded herself.
If Preston was really angry and stopped talking to her, wasn't that exactly what she wanted?
The whole reason she broke up with him was to stop herself from falling too deep.
If he hadn't cunningly slid into the role of her assistant, they wouldn't have been forced to see each other every single day.
And now...
Everything should just go back to normal.
She tried to soothe herself with that logic, but the more she did, the more frustrated she became.
"What the hell! He's the one who misunderstood me first. He's the one who rushed over to play the hero..."
Grumbling, Melanie grabbed her bag and stormed out of her office, ready to march over to Stellaris PharmaTech and give Preston a piece of her mind.
But the moment she stepped out of the Royce Group building, she ran straight into a familiar face.
"Director York?"
Melanie was surprised to see Sebastian.
But Sebastian looked completely calm as he spotted her.
As always, he wore his white coat, looking every bit the pristine medical professional.
However, perhaps because of the black-rimmed glasses now resting on his straight nose, his aura felt slightly different from when they first met.
He looked a little younger, a bit more vibrant.
Less rigid and arrogant.
Or maybe it was just the way he looked at her now—his eyes were bright and clear, lacking the intense scrutiny from their first encounter.
Sebastian noticed the slight curiosity in her eyes regarding the box.
Without hesitation, he slipped off the ribbon and opened the box right in front of her.
Melanie raised an eyebrow.
Given the brand, she had automatically assumed it was a handbag.
Instead, resting inside the box was a pair of shoes.
A pair of sleek, black pointed-toe heels.
The style itself wasn't particularly rare.
But one glance was enough to tell they were infinitely more exquisite than standard retail shoes.
The upper was crafted from exquisite crocodile leather, the scales dense and flawlessly aligned, clearly selected with extreme precision.
The leather was polished to a flawless shine, radiating an elegant, icy gleam under the sunlight.
The heels were high, about four inches, but instead of the usual thin metal, they were wrapped in burnished brass. The iconic monogram was subtly engraved into the metal, finished with a dark gold hallmark at the base.
"They're for you."
