"...Huh?"
Melanie was stunned.
"You just tore up a termination letter stamped with my official seal? Do you have any respect for me as your boss at all?"
Terrified of making her angrier, Preston's tone was much softer than usual.
"Then you can punish me properly when we get home tonight."
The words rolled off Preston's tongue smoothly, but they sounded incredibly wrong to Melanie's ears.
The surrounding crowd of onlookers heard every word.
"Holy shit. Go home... and punish?"
"Is he a sugar baby?"
"Or maybe... friends with benefits?"
"Whatever they are, they're definitely freaky."
Melanie massaged her temples, realizing she couldn't stay here another second.
"Let's go. We're getting lunch."
She grabbed Preston's arm and strode away, quickly leaving the gossiping crowd behind.
"I'm so jealous of Ms. Royce."
The onlookers were still basking in the juicy drama.
"Jealous of what? Those shoes are definitely knock-offs. If they were real, then I'd be jealous."
"No one is even buying me knock-offs! Let alone getting down to put them on my feet."
"Hey, do you think... if the shoes are fake, is The Starry Moonstone Anklet fake too?"
"It looked pretty sparkly. I bet they're lab-grown diamonds."
"No way, I have to ask Preston later where he bought them. That store is doing God's work."
After grabbing lunch with Melanie, Preston returned to his workstation at the Royce Group.
Even though he had torn up that termination letter...
Everyone at the company knew Melanie had fired him. Even if he hadn't officially been processed out by HR, no one dared to assign him any actual work.
He had warned him against flashy jewelry, claiming it was impractical and too ostentatious.
The key was exclusivity.
Elias had sworn that no woman could resist a limited-edition luxury piece; the staggering price tag and prestige would perfectly demonstrate a man's devotion.
Initially, Preston had been skeptical of the advice.
Melanie was never materialistic.
Unless she was attending a formal event, her daily wardrobe was effortlessly casual and understated.
In Preston's mind, uncovering clues about her mother's accident from four years ago would have made her infinitely happier than any designer label.
But his leads on the accident were still too thin. With Melanie absolutely furious at him, he was desperate enough to try anything.
And so, he had taken a private flight directly to Louis Vuitton Headquarters to purchase a pair of shoes from their thirtieth-anniversary collection, limited to only thirty pairs worldwide.
The result had been completely unexpected. It worked like a charm.
"I see! You gave the Oracle those limited-edition LV shoes. Not bad taste at all. No wonder she's cooled off."
