She also suspected he had given it to her precisely because he couldn't walk in with her.

It was his way of staying close to her throughout the night.

Instinctively touching the brooch over her heart, Melanie felt an inexplicable sense of security wash over her.

With that, she turned and walked into the grand venue alone.

"Well, if it isn't Ms. Royce of the Royce Group."

Melanie was signing the red carpet board when she heard the shrill, familiar voice.

Turning her head, she wasn't surprised to see Leila Langley.

Melanie lifted her gaze, slowly dragging her eyes up and down Leila's outfit.

Leila was dressed far more aggressively than she was.

She was stuffed into a gaudy crimson lace gown, aggressively spangled with sequins that made her look like a walking disco ball.

The dress itself wasn't terrible for her figure.

What Melanie couldn't fathom was why Leila had paired it with a violently green jade necklace and matching earrings.

The clash of the stark green against the crimson made Leila look a decade older than she was.

Catching Melanie staring, Leila immediately struck a pretentious, arrogant pose.

"Look at how plain you are. You only have that one little brooch. Dominic bought me this entire jade set."

"Oh."

Melanie replied with a cool, deadpan hum, turning back to finish her signature on the board.

"Ugh! Keep acting like you're above it all,"

Leila muttered indignantly.

She refused to believe Melanie wasn't insanely jealous of Dominic lavishing her with such expensive gifts.

Seeing Melanie turn to walk away, Leila quickly stepped out to stomp on her pristine white train.

Catching the movement out of the corner of her eye, Melanie swiftly pulled her skirt forward.

Leila's foot met thin air. Off-balance and teetering on stilettos, she pitched forward and face-planted spectacularly onto the red carpet.
