She Left She Thrived She’s Worth Billions novel Chapter 1125

"You're driving my car?" Melanie asked, watching him nod in confirmation.

"Then... what about yours?"

"I'll have Philip come pick it up."

Melanie couldn't help but laugh at that.

Spoken like a true boss.

Philip used to be her bodyguard and assistant for a while.

He was incredibly competent.

But having a demanding boss like Preston? She wasn't sure if Philip was lucky or cursed.

Preston started the engine, keeping his eyes on the road as he asked, "What are you thinking about?"

Melanie twitched, her smile faltering.

Could he somehow read her mind when she was silently critiquing him?

She shrugged it off.

Impossible.

"I was just thinking... how did my tough, independent best friend turn into such a hopeless romantic?"

Melanie rested her chin on her hand, smoothly steering the conversation away.

"You mean Daphne?"

"Exactly!"

Melanie nodded emphatically, looking over at Preston as he drove.

"You have no idea how terrified she was when she found out about the crash."

"They were supposed to have dinner tonight, but he got into the accident and had to call her."

Melanie recalled how Daphne had explained it: Everett had called to cancel, saying it was a minor fender bender and she didn't need to come down.

But Daphne couldn't just sit there. She practically dragged Melanie out the door to race to the hospital.

Remembering the sheer terror etched onto Daphne's face, Melanie playfully pouted.

"Honestly, I think I'm a little jealous. If I got into a wreck, do you think Daphne would panic like that for me?"

She turned her head to look at Preston.

A heavy silence stretched between them before Preston finally parted his lips.

He didn't answer her question.

Instead, he countered with one of his own.

"If I were the one in a crash, would you be as terrified for me as Daphne is for Everett?"

His voice was soft, the question delivered with an almost dangerous casualness.
