Daphne Morrell's heart hammered against her ribs, leaving her completely flustered for a moment. What do I do? What do I do? What if Everett really proposes? The sheer thrill of it overwhelmed her, making her feel as though the joy and happiness bubbling inside her might just spill over. She wasn't ready. But she was so incredibly happy. She just knew she was going to cry. Daphne couldn't help but lower her head, a secret smile playing on her lips.
Everett Kingsley noticed her. He had no idea why she was ducking her head with that shy, blissed-out smile. It stood in stark contrast to his own expression. Everett looked grim, his gaze somber. He seemed to be hesitating, wrestling with some internal conflict. Yet beneath it all lay a hidden resolve... And a ruthless edge.
Daphne finally managed to steady her racing heart and looked up at him. "Everett..." She offered him a radiant smile, sweet with the promise of happiness.
Everett acted as if he didn't even notice her excitement. "Sit down," he said evenly.
Daphne blinked, taking her seat. Why did he look so unhappy? Wasn't he going to propose? Her heart suddenly dropped. But on second thought, maybe he was just incredibly nervous and didn't know how to act. Comforted by the thought, she relaxed.
"By the way, Everett... about last night. That was my fault. Are you... still mad at me?" she asked tentatively.
He quickly waved it off. "No, no, I'm not mad. Last night wasn't your fault anyway. It was on me..."
