Melanie's fake smile turned even stiffer at Sam's blunt observation.
She did, in fact, hate visiting abbeys. The original plan was to hit up a local amusement park, but Sam had dragged them to the Emberton Abbey, aggressively pitching it as a Four-Star Sanctuary Resort where wishes were guaranteed to come true.
Melanie didn't believe in wishes. If wishes worked, nobody would ever have to try at anything.
Plus, the abbey was significantly smaller than she had imagined. It wasn't even peak tourist season, yet the grounds were suffocatingly packed with a sea of people. The dense crowd only made the experience worse.
But the crowded abbey wasn't the reason she was distracted. She kept checking her phone, waiting for a text from Preston.
Logically, Preston should have heard from Miles by now. He should know she was currently wandering around Emberton with Daphne, Sam, and Sebastian.
Knowing Preston's possessive, volatile nature, there was absolutely no way he would just sit back and ignore this.
Yet, her screen remained entirely blank. Not a single message.
Frowning, Melanie briefly wondered if her phone was broken. Or maybe the app had crashed.
Meanwhile, back in Averin.
Inside the executive office of Stellaris PharmaTech.
"Are you seriously just going to sit there and wait for her to come back?"
Gabriel Whitmore slammed his hand down on Preston's mahogany desk, immediately wincing and blowing on his stinging palm.
When Miles had called to report on Melanie's situation, Preston had been in the middle of reviewing documents, so Gabriel had boldly answered the phone and put it on speaker. Every single detail Miles reported had gone straight into Gabriel's ears.
