"Do you want to go inside, Angel?"
It had been a while since Melanie Royce had seen the man walking toward her, but she could never forget that face, nor that stark white hair.
Winter had set in, and Shawn Sterling had updated his wardrobe to match.
He wore a thick, low-cut white knit sweater draped beneath a clearly expensive, long white wool coat.
His tailored white wool trousers were crisply pressed, paired perfectly with casual white leather loafers.
Combined with his striking white hair, Melanie had to admit that the Shawn standing before her practically glowed.
"Long time no see, Angel. Did you miss me?"
Shawn stopped right in front of her. His eyes, a shade lighter than most, were bright and clear, yet they held the same impenetrable depth as Preston Whitmore's.
"What will you do if I say no?"
Shawn chuckled. With a swift flick of his wrist, he flashed a butterfly knife at her.
Melanie didn't even flinch, but Tiffany Lloyd, standing beside her, nearly jumped out of her skin.
"S-Security... Security!"
She scrambled to find the guards, terrified there was about to be a murder right at the front doors of their research institute.
But in the very next second, the lethal blade in Shawn's hand transformed into a vibrant, blooming red rose.
"If you didn't miss me, Angel, I'd just have to die right here in front of you."
It was clearly a joke, but he delivered it with chilling sincerity.
With that, he tucked the magically conjured rose into the breast pocket of her coat.
"Come on, let me take you inside."
Shawn reached out naturally to take her hand, but Melanie smoothly dodged him, making it look accidental though it was entirely deliberate.
Grasping at empty air, he twitched his fingers and offered a sheepish smile.
Even though he had offered to escort her into the Gavin Lockridge Medical Research Institute, Melanie took the lead, leaving him a step behind.
"Who let you in? Security... Security!"
Seeing Melanie and Shawn strutting inside like they owned the place, Tiffany frantically waved the guards over.
