"Yep!"
Aria answered immediately.
"B1, B2..."
She tapped the buttons on the panel.
"That's two levels, plain and simple!"
Aria looked at her as if she were asking stupid questions just to be difficult.
That reaction alone told Melanie everything she needed to know—Aria was completely in the dark about her own workplace.
The elevator's speed remained constant, yet the trip from B1 to B2 was taking more than double the time of a standard floor.
If her instincts were right, there were more than just two subterranean levels here.
There was almost certainly a hidden, off-the-books sub-level sandwiched between B1 and B2.
Seeing Melanie fall silent, Aria shot her a haughty eye roll.
Shawn glanced at Aria before shifting his full attention back to Melanie.
A sly, knowing smile curved his lips.
Finally, the elevator dinged at B2, and he stepped out.
"Let me walk you to your car, Mr. Sterling."
Before Aria's fawning offer even finished leaving her mouth, Shawn lunged, reaching out to grab Melanie.
Anticipating the move, she smoothly side-stepped his grasp.
Meeting his gaze, she offered a polite, untouchable smile.
"Something wrong, Mr. Sterling? Was there a mosquito hovering near me?"
A flicker of annoyance crossed his eyes, gone as quickly as it had appeared.
Smirking, he played along with the joke.
"Yeah, a mutant one."
Aria looked back and forth between the two of them.
It was freezing out—what mosquitos?
She wasn't blind. He had obviously tried to yank Melanie out of the elevator.
