Without missing a beat, Preston closed the distance, snatched Melanie's phone right off her desk, and hit the speaker button.
"Elias, what exactly are you and Melanie discussing?"
Hearing Preston's low, magnetically dangerous voice, Elias blurted out:
"Booking hotel rooms!"
Beside him, Melanie immediately facepalmed.
I'm doomed...
Preston was instantly engulfed in an aura of pure, icy hostility.
This hostility caused the temperature in Melanie's office to plummet several degrees.
"Cut the crap."
Three simple words, yet Elias caught the dense, suffocating threat practically dripping through the receiver.
"I'm telling the truth! I'm not lying to you. If you don't believe me, ask the Oracle!"
Hearing this, Preston's sharp gaze snapped straight to Melanie's face.
Her mouth was twitching frantically as she offered a painfully awkward smile.
Elias was absolutely doing this on purpose.
"Speaking of which, haven't you and the Oracle already broken up? She has the freedom to talk about hotel rooms with whoever she wants."
"Let me tell you, Preston, don't think you can get away with whatever you want just because you're handsome. If my genes mutate one day and I end up handsomer than you, the Oracle might just pick me as her new boyfriend..."
Before Elias could finish his delusional daydream, Melanie frantically ended the call.
Dead silence blanketed the office.
Staring at Preston's terrifyingly cold expression, Melanie felt a sudden, intense spike of anxiety.
Meanwhile, halfway across the globe in Xavorn, Elias grinned down at his disconnected phone.
"Oh, Oracle, don't blame me. I'm doing this for your own good," he muttered to himself, looking like a man completely devoted to a noble cause.
He had purposely provoked Preston to trigger his jealousy.
If Preston completely lost his mind, he might just lock Melanie down for good!
"Romance happens in the bedroom! You'd better step up your game, Preston!"
