He knew perfectly well that visiting Elara wouldn't change a thing.
Would looking at her miraculously heal her injuries? Would it take away her pain?
Or would a quick visit magically convince Alistair to stop abusing her?
The answer to all of that was no.
His presence couldn't alter reality.
Which meant this entire trip was pointless.
If anything, Elara might think he was just being a busybody, coming here to gloat and kick her while she was down.
Thinking of this, Gabriel turned on his heel, ready to leave.
But before he could take a single step, the voices drifting from the room froze him in his tracks.
"Elara, I know you've been wronged, but... your engagement to Alistair cannot be broken under any circumstances."
"Your mother is right, Elara. You are a daughter of the Bennett family. You must do your part to help us rise again."
"He did go a bit far this time... but there's always a reason! If you hadn't been flirting with his client, he wouldn't have gotten so angry."
"Exactly. You're a woman, you need to remember to be more reserved. Alistair is just the jealous type, which shows how much he cares about you!"
"He already promised us he won't lay a hand on you again. You can rest easy!"
Callum and Chloe kept chiming in, one after the other. But the more they spoke, the harder the tears cascaded down Elara's face as she lay trapped in the hospital bed.
"Dad, Mom..."
When Elara finally spoke, her voice was a raspy, weak whisper.
Filled with pure agony.
"Just leave me alone for a while."
Hearing this, Chloe and Callum exchanged a glance before nodding in unison.
"Alright... ring the bell if you need anything!"
With that final instruction, the parents filed out of the room.
