Melanie couldn't make up her mind, so she asked for Preston's opinion.
She never expected him to drive her straight to a mall to buy something new.
"This is too extravagant. I can't accept it."
"I'll feel bad if you don't. I'm the one who asked you for a favor, so it's only right for me to buy you an outfit as a thank you."
Melanie found that once Preston started talking more, it was hard to argue with him.
"Besides... you can probably tell that I'm not short on money."
After Preston said that, Melanie stopped insisting.
She tried on five different outfits and finally chose a simple, pale yellow one.
"Do you like yellow?"
"I just thought it was the most appropriate for a hospital visit."
"I see…"
Looking at Preston's expression, Melanie got the feeling he really wanted to understand her tastes and preferences.
"Actually, my favorite color is purple…"
There had been a purple outfit among the ones she tried on.
It was her favorite.
But today she was visiting Preston's grandmother in the hospital. Appropriateness was more important than her personal preference. The purple outfit was a bit too avant-garde in its design, so she chose the yellow one instead.
She didn't say any of this to Preston.
He just stared at her face, as if trying to read her thoughts through her expression.
They had chosen the outfit, and Preston went to pay.
"Is this price right?"
At the checkout counter, Melanie happened to glance at the price on the bill.
The yellow outfit she had chosen was clearly over thirty thousand dollars, so why did the total on the bill say nearly ninety thousand?
"Preston, the clerk made a mistake. Let's go back and have them fix it..."
Before she could finish, Preston had already paid.
A warm feeling spread through her chest. Melanie was about to thank Preston when he walked over and naturally took the two large paper bags from her hands.
"Let's go."
"Oh, okay…"
Melanie followed behind Preston, and as they walked out of the store, she overheard the clerks chatting inside:
"Look at her boyfriend, so generous! Buys clothes worth tens of thousands of dollars without a second thought, and he even bought two sets!"
"And he's so, so, so handsome!"
"She must have been a saint in a previous life to land a guy like that. I'm so jealous."
Guessing they were talking about her and Preston, Melanie didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
She wondered if they would still be so envious of her "fortune" if they knew her actual marriage was an arranged one to a man who cheated on her with his adoptive sister and had a child out of wedlock with her.
After leaving the clothing store, Preston took Melanie into a jewelry store to pick out a simple necklace as an accessory.
Not far away, Fiona had been staring at them for a long time.
