He approached Dominic Hale and whispered in his ear, "Watch your wife. Tell her to keep her mouth shut. Whether we invest in Adrian Mercer still requires careful consideration."
"I understand, Dad."
Melanie Royce had just entered the venue when Dominic intercepted her.
"What are you doing here?"
"I…"
"This place is filled with the elite of the pharmaceutical industry. You wouldn't understand a thing. Aren't you just trying to cause a scene?"
As Dominic spoke, he shot Melanie a look, hoping she would take the hint and leave on her own.
"He's right, Melanie…"
Evelyn Hale also walked over, deliberately showing off her diamond brooch to Melanie.
"That machine you got at the auction—did you sell it for scrap because you couldn't figure out how to use it?"
Seeing both Dominic and Evelyn mock Melanie, some of Dominic's acquaintances couldn't help but huddle together, whispering amongst themselves.
"Is this Mrs. Hale all beauty and no brains?"
"I heard she only has a bachelor's degree, which is a bit low. But I thought her family was quite influential?"
"A lost cause. What good is an influential family if she's like that?"
"Oh, I know! Her family owns Nathaniel… I think her dad's new wife brought a daughter with her, and *that* daughter is the brilliant one. Isn't she in a Ph.D. program or something?"
"And then you look at his own daughter… Tsk, tsk."
Ignoring the murmurs around her, Melanie nonchalantly picked up a glass of champagne and took a sip.
Just then, Luminara Hall suddenly went dark.
Adrian Mercer was no longer mingling with the guests. He had appeared on stage.
"I am deeply honored by the presence of all our distinguished guests tonight."
Adrian held a microphone in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other.
"As you all know, I'm a research guy. Scientists aren't great with pleasantries…"
Below the stage, the sounds of doubt grew louder. On stage, Adrian Mercer calmly connected the device to a computer and turned on the projector.
When everyone in the room witnessed the real-time 3D tissue-printing data and simulated drug efficacy animations scrolling across the big screen, the skepticism turned to astonishment.
"That's impossible!" Dominic exclaimed, shocked.
His voice was loud enough for Adrian to hear from the stage.
"Of course, it's possible," Adrian said with a confident smile.
"Because this is no longer the Alpha-1 model built by NexBio Innovations… This is a modified, second-generation machine. Its efficiency and precision far exceed any other device of its kind on the market. It is because of this machine that I have absolute confidence in developing an unprecedented new anti-cancer drug."
As Adrian delivered his passionate speech, Dominic felt his own heart racing with possibilities.
"But… who was brilliant enough to modify it?"
Just as the question was raised from the audience, the lighting in the hall changed again.
In the darkness, a single spotlight fell on Melanie.
