Lila stared nervously at Melanie, her palms sweating as she gripped the swing's chains.
In contrast, Melanie seemed perfectly calm and composed.
She first took out a piece of candy and offered it to Lila.
Lila shook her head forcefully.
"I don't want it! I don't take things from you. You're a bad person!"
"Did your mother tell you that?"
Lila didn't nod, but her silence was a confirmation.
Melanie wasn't in a hurry. She popped a piece of candy into her own mouth. The creamy scent was so rich that even Lila could smell it.
She licked her lips and muttered under her breath:
"Mommy said you did it on purpose so I couldn't be the brand ambassador."
Melanie shrugged, looking helpless.
"That's because your mother's genetic test failed the system's screening."
"What?"
Lila only partially understood.
"To put it simply, the system didn't reject you; it rejected your mother. So the reason you couldn't be the brand ambassador is because of her. It's her fault, not yours."
As Melanie spoke in her calm, even voice, Lila's expression grew more and more astonished.
"They didn't tell you, but I don't think you should be kept in the dark. That's why I came here specifically to tell you the truth."
After speaking, Melanie turned to leave.
"Ms. Melanie!"
Lila called out in her small, childish voice.
"Are you sure you weren't the one bullying me?"
Melanie turned back and offered Lila another piece of candy.
