“I’m not cold… but you are. You haven’t recovered yet, so don’t catch a cold.”
Hearing Melanie’s concern, Preston froze.
“How did you know I haven’t recovered?”
As soon as he spoke, Melanie suddenly grabbed his hand and lifted it.
“The bruise and the tape marks on the back of your hand prove you were getting an IV before you came to see me. Am I right?”
Preston’s lips parted, but before he could speak, he heard Melanie’s apology.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come to your company on my own. I should have contacted you first.”
Melanie’s voice was filled with self-reproach, as was her heart.
When she woke up in the hospital, there was only one thought in her mind:
See Preston.
She wanted to see Preston.
She wanted to know how he was.
She wanted to thank him in person.
So, after Dominic left, she checked herself out as quickly as possible and drove to Preston’s company.
She hadn't contacted him at all.
She had wanted to surprise him by showing up at his office unexpectedly.
However…
It had been a rash decision.
She hadn't considered for a second that Preston might have been hospitalized just like her, or that his injuries could be even more severe.
Looking down at the bruised and needle-marked back of Preston’s hand, Melanie felt a tightness in her chest.
She didn’t want to admit she was feeling a pang of heartache for him.
But if it wasn't heartache, what else could this feeling be called?
“You don’t need to apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong…”
Preston’s magnetic voice wrapped around her, like a finger gently plucking at her heartstrings.
“Whether it was rushing into the fire to save you or pulling out my IV to see you… I did those things because I wanted to. I’m responsible for any consequences, not you.”
His calm words stirred a powerful storm inside Melanie.
She looked at Preston’s serious face and, after a moment, couldn’t help but smile.
