She Left She Thrived She’s Worth Billions novel Chapter 299

“I’m not cold… but you are. You haven’t recovered yet, so don’t catch a cold.”

Hearing Melanie’s concern, Preston froze.

“How did you know I haven’t recovered?”

As soon as he spoke, Melanie suddenly grabbed his hand and lifted it.

“The bruise and the tape marks on the back of your hand prove you were getting an IV before you came to see me. Am I right?”

Preston’s lips parted, but before he could speak, he heard Melanie’s apology.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come to your company on my own. I should have contacted you first.”

Melanie’s voice was filled with self-reproach, as was her heart.

When she woke up in the hospital, there was only one thought in her mind:

See Preston.

She wanted to see Preston.

She wanted to know how he was.

She wanted to thank him in person.

So, after Dominic left, she checked herself out as quickly as possible and drove to Preston’s company.

She hadn't contacted him at all.

She had wanted to surprise him by showing up at his office unexpectedly.

However…

It had been a rash decision.

She hadn't considered for a second that Preston might have been hospitalized just like her, or that his injuries could be even more severe.

Looking down at the bruised and needle-marked back of Preston’s hand, Melanie felt a tightness in her chest.

She didn’t want to admit she was feeling a pang of heartache for him.

But if it wasn't heartache, what else could this feeling be called?

“You don’t need to apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong…”

Preston’s magnetic voice wrapped around her, like a finger gently plucking at her heartstrings.

“Whether it was rushing into the fire to save you or pulling out my IV to see you… I did those things because I wanted to. I’m responsible for any consequences, not you.”

His calm words stirred a powerful storm inside Melanie.

She looked at Preston’s serious face and, after a moment, couldn’t help but smile.

This time, however, the trigger was Evelyn’s jewelry.

As far as Dominic could remember, he had spent a small fortune on Evelyn, especially on jewelry.

For holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays, he bought her anything she wanted.

He could recall at least brooches, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, particularly one-of-a-kind pieces he’d won for her at auctions.

Yet, the vanity Evelyn had knocked over contained only a handful of pendants and a few rings.

Suspicion immediately flared in Dominic’s mind.

He had only made a casual comment about the missing jewelry, but Evelyn’s reaction was extreme. She had started screaming at him, endlessly listing how much money he had spent on Melanie over the years.

Dominic had said some harsh things in return, and the two had a vicious argument.

Lila was next to them, crying her heart out.

Finally, Dominic stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

His black Maybach remained parked on the side of the road.

Sitting in the car, Dominic’s heated mind gradually began to cool.

The missing jewelry and Evelyn’s over-the-top reaction made him feel more and more that something was wrong.
