Then…
Then why did Dominic ask her to a hotel room?
Could it be…
Evelyn couldn’t stop herself from trembling.
Were that room, the flowers, and the wine all prepared by Dominic for Melanie?
Evelyn glared at Dominic, her eyes wide with disbelief.
The person Dominic truly wanted to sleep with last night…
Was Melanie…
It was Melanie?!
Evelyn felt as if she had been struck by lightning.
Then… what did that make her?
For all these years, to protect Dominic’s career and ensure the Hale family could continue to receive resources from the Royce family, she had been willing to marry his best friend. She became the other woman, sleeping with Dominic without any official status and bearing his children.
She had thought that, at the very least, Dominic truly loved her. That he was willing to remain faithful to her by not touching Melanie for four years, and that he wanted to build a career for her and Lila, to free himself from the Hale family’s control and achieve true financial independence so he could divorce Melanie and marry her.
But in the end…
Was it all just her wishful thinking?!
Evelyn felt the world go dark.
But she couldn’t just confront Dominic in the middle of the office about his true feelings.
If she lost control of her emotions and made a scene, wouldn’t the entire company find out that she, Dominic’s adoptive sister, was also his mistress?!
Just as Melanie pushed open the door to Dominic’s office, she saw him and Evelyn standing face to face, both with strange expressions.
“Melanie?!”
When Dominic saw Melanie, his eyes lit up instantly.
He immediately walked around Evelyn to stand in front of Melanie.
“I knew you’d come.”
Dominic was practically glowing.
His wait had not been in vain. His intuition told him that seeing Melanie at this very moment meant something good was about to happen.
Dominic instinctively reached for Melanie’s hand, but she skillfully avoided his touch.
“I brought someone with me…”
She wouldn’t allow herself to be reduced to this.
Just as she was about to go back into Dominic’s office, Adrian Mercer walked out.
Evelyn quickly hid in a corner.
Adrian Mercer left.
But Melanie didn’t.
Evelyn’s eyes darted around, and she secretly pricked up her ears to eavesdrop.
Inside the office, Dominic’s heart was pounding with excitement.
“Honey, you’ve worked so hard. I knew you were the best!”
Seeing Dominic spread his arms for a hug, Melanie immediately grabbed the experimental data from the desk and shoved it into his arms.
“I didn’t do much. It was all thanks to the efficiency of Adrian Mercer and his team.”
To Dominic, Melanie’s words made sense.
After all, the R&D team for the new cancer drug was Adrian’s. Melanie was in charge of coordination, and with her one or two years of pharmaceutical studies, she could occasionally lend a hand.
However, while that was logically true, emotionally, Dominic still felt that half the credit for this project’s massive success belonged to Melanie.
