What if Melanie was actually swayed by Bryant and asked for a divorce?
A wave of panic washed over Dominic.
“No, that won’t happen…”
Dominic shook his head, muttering to himself.
Melanie loved him too much. How could she ever ask for a divorce?
“Exactly, how could Melanie bear to leave me?”
“What are you muttering about?”
Suddenly, Melanie’s voice came from behind him.
Dominic turned, and his eyes widened. Dressed in that vibrant yellow mermaid gown and adorned with gold and diamonds, Melanie looked as beautiful as an angel, regal and magnificent.
And yet…
Somehow, he felt she was too beautiful—so beautiful she seemed untouchable, so beautiful he felt he wasn't worthy of her.
“Melanie, did Dominic buy you that dress?”
Camilla sidled up to them, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
“I seem to recall Dominic giving you a pink one.”
“Yes, it was pink,” Melanie replied nonchalantly. “But I felt it was too childish and not appropriate, so I didn’t wear it.”
“Oh…”
Camilla rolled her eyes and sneered.
“So you think pink is too childish and inappropriate… but this is appropriate? Bright yellow… anyone who didn't know better would think you were about to be crowned queen!”
After Camilla's jab, she was met with Melanie’s unbothered laughter.
“Well, in that case, all I’m missing is a crown. Are you going to buy me one, Mother?”
“You…”
“Alright, alright, Mom. It’s a celebration. Why are you arguing with Melanie?”
Dominic ushered Camilla away.
As she left, Camilla couldn't resist shooting one last glare at Melanie.
Even if Melanie was instrumental to the company’s IPO, she shouldn't have dressed so ostentatiously for the occasion.
Where did that leave her, the mother-in-law?!
And the hall was filled with guests, most of them men. Nearly every pair of eyes was glued to Melanie. What did that say about Dominic’s standing?
The more Camilla thought about it, the angrier she became.
It was better before, when Melanie was content to stay at home, the woman behind Dominic.
Now, it felt as if her son had married into the Royce family, not the other way around.
Seeing that Camilla was upset with Melanie, Evelyn quickly pulled Lila over.
“Mom, here, have some juice!”
Evelyn handed Camilla a glass of freshly squeezed juice.
“My sister-in-law looks so beautiful today! All dolled up like that, anyone can see she’s the Hale family’s greatest hero. Without her, the new company would never have gone public.”
“Bah!”
“He’s so handsome!”
“Is he also from Stellaris PharmaTech? But… why have I never seen him before?”
“I know, right? A man that handsome should be unforgettable!”
“So who is he? He has an even stronger presence than Mr. Whitmore. It’s almost… intimidating…”
The guests whispered amongst themselves.
For a moment, the two men from Stellaris PharmaTech became the center of attention.
Melanie stared intently at the man walking toward her, her eyes filled with unconcealed surprise.
As always, he was dressed in a sharp, elegant black suit, paired with a fine black shirt and black tie.
White silk gloves seemed permanently affixed to his hands.
He looked like a king emerging from an ancient castle, radiating a commanding presence that filled the room.
It was the innate, intimidating pressure of a natural-born leader, both awe-inspiring and unnerving.
His deep, cold eyes were like an abyss, making one shiver with a sense of dread.
Even though Gabriel was the high-profile heir to a wealthy family, next to this man, he seemed like a mere assistant, following in his wake.
Preston had arrived.
He stopped right in front of Melanie.
Preston had told her he would attend the celebration for The Hale Health Center’s IPO, so she shouldn’t have been surprised.
However, Melanie had never imagined that he would arrive with Gabriel.
