“What did you put in this porridge? It tastes so strange.”
“It’s a special porridge, Mom.”
“Don’t you dare call me Mom. Who’s your mom? I don’t have an ungrateful daughter like you!”
Evelyn didn’t dare to breathe a word in response to Camilla’s scolding. Ever since Camilla had been hospitalized, Evelyn had been tending to her day and night. Whatever Camilla wanted to eat, she had to go buy it and cook it. On top of that, she had to wrap herself in layers of clothing to avoid being recognized outside.
Normally, Evelyn wasn’t a big celebrity, so few people knew who she was. However, at that celebration banquet, Dominic had hired a team to livestream the event, and Melanie had used that livestream to expose her and Dominic’s affair. Now, her photos and videos were all over the internet. Everyone was cursing her out and turning her into vulgar memes.
Evelyn truly felt too ashamed to face anyone. Lila had also been withdrawn from school because she, too, had become a public figure—a negative one. If she continued to go to school, she would be bullied and pointed at by all the other students. So, mother and daughter could only hide out in the hospital.
Camilla never had a kind word for her. She even found fault with the way Evelyn emptied the bedpan. Sometimes, when Lila couldn’t take it anymore and started crying, Camilla would get annoyed and kick her out into the hallway.
“Mom, Lila is still part of the Hale family bloodline. Blood is thicker than water!”
“To hell with 'blood being thicker than water'! What's the point of a granddaughter anyway? Besides, if it weren’t for her, would my son have been exposed for cheating during his marriage?!”
Once, Evelyn had hoped her daughter would elevate her status, but seeing Camilla’s attitude now, her hopes were dashed.
Camilla finished the entire bowl of porridge and ate a side of marinated abalone. Meanwhile, Evelyn and Lila were gnawing on stale bread.
“Grandma, I want to eat abalone too. Can I have a bite?” Lila asked, sidling up to Camilla, only to be shoved to the ground.
“Mom, what are you doing?!” Evelyn cried out as she helped Lila up. Lila immediately burst into tears.
“What are you crying about! It’s your crying that’s ruining our family’s fortune! you’re a curse on this family! A total jinx!” Camilla shrieked in frustration.
“By the way, where’s Dominic? Why hasn’t he come to see me?”
“He… he should be at Family Court with Melanie, finalizing the divorce right now.”
Hearing this, Camilla’s expression changed drastically.
“They’re really getting divorced?!”
Right now, the Hale Health Center was bankrupt, the Hale Group’s stock had crashed, and Dominic and their family’s reputation in the entire industry was at rock bottom. If he divorced Melanie at a time like this, who would want him? Moreover, once they divorced, they would lose access to all of Nathaniel’s resources. How could they possibly make a comeback?
“I heard… that he already signed the divorce papers and arranged to meet Melanie at Family Court, so they must be divorced by now… But don’t worry, Mom. No matter what happens, I will always be by his side. I will stand with the Hale family through thick and thin.”
