Dominic's face split into a massive grin.
"Thanks, Dad! I didn't realize you were so supportive of me winning her back. You really went all out."
Gregory raised his hand, fully prepared to smack the stupid look off his son's face.
"Winning her back? Do you have amnesia about your actual mission?"
Dominic's soaring excitement crashed into a brick wall.
"I bought that bag to soften her up so you can earn her trust back! Once you're in, you crack her safe and steal the formula!"
"But Dad..." A deeply pained, conflicted look twisted Dominic's features.
"Whether I get the formula or not... the second she finds out I stole from her, any chance of us getting back together is dead!"
"You're still crying about getting back together?!"
This time, the slap actually connected with Dominic's shoulder.
"Get that formula at all costs!" Gregory ordered, his expression ice-cold.
"If you fail, you will spend the rest of your pathetic life begging for scraps. You'll have to watch her marry a man infinitely wealthier and more powerful than you could ever hope to be!"
"But if you steal that formula, the Hale Group will reign supreme again."
"And the Royce Group will be the ones filing for bankruptcy."
Gregory gripped his son's shoulder.
"Think about it. When her company goes up in flames, she'll have no leverage left to reject you. She'll be completely at your mercy. She might even crawl back on her knees begging for your help."
Poisoned by his father's words, a twisted fantasy bloomed in Dominic's mind: Melanie, ruined and desperate, sobbing as she threw herself at his feet.
The very thought of it sent a thrill of dark satisfaction rushing through his veins.
"Okay. I get it now, Dad. You're absolutely right."
The toddler was far too hot for Dominic to waste time screaming at Evelyn for not bringing her straight to an emergency room.
He sprinted out the door with Lila in his arms. Scrambling after him, Evelyn couldn't suppress the sly smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth.
She had bet on this exact reaction. Even if Dominic despised her now, he could never abandon his own flesh and blood.
Since the Hale family had banished both of them to the countryside, her only ticket back to high society was through him.
So, she had intentionally bathed Lila in freezing water to trigger the dangerous fever.
Buying herself the perfect excuse to return.
They rushed the child to the ER, where the doctors immediately hooked her up to an IV and admitted her for observation.
Dominic paid for a private VIP room, pulling up a chair beside the bed as Evelyn hovered nearby.
"Dominic... are you still mad at me?" she asked in a sickeningly sweet whisper, tentatively reaching out to stroke his hand.
