"All right, get back to work! Have we even hit this month's KPIs yet?" At Melanie's gentle reprimand, the female employee stuck her tongue out playfully before scurrying back to her desk with the others.
Melanie was just heading into her office when her assistant called out. "Ms. Royce, there's a delivery driver at the front entrance."
Melanie turned, shooting her assistant a bewildered look. Why was a delivery driver looking for her? She hadn't ordered anything.
"He said your boyfriend, Mr. Whitmore, ordered Boba for the entire office."
The moment the words left the assistant's mouth, the office erupted into collective gasps and cheers. Some were thrilled about the free drinks, while others were simply eating up the workplace romance.
Melanie couldn't help but laugh softly. *What on earth is Preston up to?*
Over at Stellaris PharmaTech, Gabriel had paced nearly fifty laps around Preston's office.
"I'm finally getting a sister-in-law! I can't believe it's Melanie—she’s the absolute best..."
Preston was trying to work. If he wasn't in such an exceptionally good mood today, he probably would have had Gabriel committed to a psychiatric ward by now.
"That's enough," he said, not looking up from his files. "I'm the one in a relationship. Why are you so worked up?"
"Because I'm happy for you, obviously!" Gabriel slapped his hand down on the mahogany desk, his expression suddenly turning dead serious.
"Do you have any idea, man? With the way you've been pining after her, I was genuinely terrified that if she rejected you, you'd end up dying alone as a bachelor!"
Preston massaged his temples at his brother's dramatic flair. But he couldn't deny that Gabriel had a point.
If he had never managed to win Melanie over, he really would have spent the rest of his life alone.
The mere thought made a wave of profound gratitude wash over him—grateful that she had fallen for him too, that she had chosen him.
"But seriously," Gabriel pressed, "when are you going to tell her that you're the head honcho at Stellaris PharmaTech? That you're a Whitmore?"
"So even Stellaris isn't good enough..." Suddenly, realization dawned on Gabriel's face.
"Oh, I get it! You're worried your future father-in-law has sky-high standards. Well, that's an easy fix! The Whitmore family is old money. On top of Stellaris PharmaTech, we have the entire Whitmore Group backing us up!"
Just as Gabriel was bragging with a look of immense pride, a knock sounded at the door. Philip walked in, carrying a thick stack of file folders.
"Mr. Whitmore..." Philip began. One look at the silent exchange between Philip and Preston was all Gabriel needed to know they were conspiring about something highly classified.
"Fine, fine, I'm leaving!" Gabriel threw his hands up, grumbling indignantly as he headed for the door. "Philip is your true love. Your own brother is just a piece of trash."
It wasn't until the door clicked shut behind Gabriel that Preston finally flipped open the folders Philip had handed him.
"These..." Philip started, his tone serious, "are all the records I could track down regarding Ms. Royce's mother and the research she conducted in Quarevia four years ago."
