Once they returned to Averin, he would make whoever tried to harm Melanie pay!
Sunlight danced across her eyelids as Melanie woke up with a slight frown.
"Pretty lady!"
Everett’s radiant smile was the first thing she saw, making her jump in surprise.
A second later, his face was shoved aside by Preston.
"What are you doing?!"
Everett immediately protested against Preston.
"Don't interrupt me while I'm talking to the pretty lady."
Like a petulant child, Everett stuck his tongue out at Preston, then turned back to grin goofily at Melanie.
Melanie slipped out of the hospital bed, her first concern entirely on Preston.
"How is your wound? Are you allowed out of bed?"
"Yeah."
Preston nodded.
"The doctor said I could get up and walk around."
He hadn't injured his leg, and he was worried that if he stayed in bed all day, he’d crowd Melanie and make her uncomfortable while she slept.
Although Preston’s complexion looked much better, Melanie’s eyes still brimmed with heartache.
She reached out, her fingertips gently brushing just above his bandaged shoulder.
She wanted to touch him, but she was too afraid of hurting him.
"Boo!"
Suddenly, Everett shouted from the sidelines, startling Melanie.
She shot him a glare, but she couldn't really be mad at him.
When Preston was first injured, their helicopter had made an emergency landing in Quarevia.
After getting his gunshot wound treated, Melanie had asked the doctors to give Everett a thorough examination as well.
Preston didn't say a word, simply offering his quiet, steady presence.
After walking for a while, Melanie finally broke the silence, her voice soft.
"Everett... just like Gavin Lockridge, he was one of Dominic's best friends. Out of the three of them, Dominic was the ringleader, Gavin was the ultimate playboy, and Everett... he was the kindest one."
As she spoke to Preston, memories of the past began to involuntarily surface in her mind.
Honestly, Melanie didn't feel like she had ever been truly close to Dominic's little trio.
After all, she hadn't even understood her own husband well enough; otherwise, she wouldn't have been deceived for so long.
But there were still some things she remembered as clear as day.
Back before she married Dominic, she had accompanied him, Gavin, Everett, and a few others out for drinks.
At the time, everyone playfully called her 'the future Mrs. Hale.'
Everyone knew she was betrothed to Dominic, his official fiancée.
Everyone except Everett. He had never once called her that.
