"As long as you are willing to be with me, I don't care about anyone else."
Preston's voice was firm, giving Melanie a deep sense of security.
Just as Melanie leaned in to kiss him again, Preston suddenly asked her a serious question. "By the way, my mother went to see you today, didn't she?"
Melanie paused, tilting her head. "How do you know everything? Are you stalking me?"
"Can't it just be that we have a telepathic connection?" Preston teased.
In truth, the person he had his men follow wasn't Melanie. It was his mother, Marjorie.
"Stalking" might have been a strong word. After their last conversation in his office, he had felt a lingering unease, worried that Marjorie would seek Melanie out personally. That was why he had someone keep an eye on her movements.
And just as he expected, Marjorie really had gone to see Melanie.
"Did my mother make things difficult for you?" Preston asked, a layer of concern settling over his striking features.
Although Marjorie wasn't an unreasonable woman, she loved her son fiercely. Hearing about his gunshot wound from Elara could have easily clouded her judgment.
Preston didn't want to see his mother do anything to hurt the woman he loved.
Melanie looked at him. This was the first time she had ever seen Preston look so intensely worried.
"What, we aren't even married yet, and you're already stressing over in-law drama?" Melanie broke into a relaxed smile. "Relax! You should have faith in your own mother, and in me."
Hearing her response, the heavy weight in Preston's chest vanished.
"She is wonderful. She even gave me her business card and told me to reach out if I ever needed anything!"
Seeing Melanie's confident and easygoing demeanor, Preston realized they must have had a pleasant conversation. He had been worrying over nothing.
Thinking about it, Melanie had always been effortlessly charming. She was nothing like him.
Melanie froze.
Still, being pressed bare against him like this made her flush with heat.
Preston noticed the rosy tint on her cheeks. "Let me hold you a little longer."
"I've been crushing you all night. Aren't I heavy?"
"Never... I'd rather have you pressed against me for the rest of my life."
"What kind of dirty talk is that?" Melanie laughed.
They lingered in bed for a while longer before finally getting up.
It was their day off, so there was no need to rush to the office. While getting dressed, Melanie glanced over at him. "By the way, Preston, are you free today? Come somewhere with me."
