Preston settled back into his plush leather executive chair, leaning back with effortless composure. "Set you up for what?"
Regina took a step forward, her expression burning with indignation.
"You knew your girlfriend was a scientific genius this whole time, didn't you? You deliberately hid the truth from us..."
Regina had every right to be furious today.
She had walked into that lab expecting to make a fool out of Melanie, only to realize the joke was entirely on her.
Understanding exactly why Regina was so riled up, Preston offered a casual shrug. "Even if I had told you the truth beforehand, would you have believed me?"
"Well, that..."
"Seeing is believing. Rather than wasting my breath trying to convince a room full of arrogant scientists, it was far more efficient to let her prove it to you herself. That's how you win a team's respect, isn't it?"
Regina opened her mouth, then snapped it shut, utterly defeated.
Preston had a point. Given her immense pride and the towering egos of the entire R&D department, a few smooth words from the boss would never have swayed them.
"I still don't get it, though. I thought Melanie had only studied basic pharmacology... but watching her extraction techniques, she operated like an absolute master."
Regina crossed her arms, fixing Preston with a piercing, unwavering stare.
"Who exactly is she?"
At Regina's question, a specific alias naturally surfaced in Preston's mind—
Schrödinger's Pill.
But Melanie had never publicly claimed that identity.
At least, she had never confessed it to him.
He had pieced it together completely on his own.
"I don't know," Preston replied smoothly.
Seeing him shake his head, Regina let out a frustrated scoff.
"Fine, keep your secrets. But thank God she's with the Royce family and partnering with Stellaris... If she were based in Xavorn, she'd easily become the Carter Group's deadliest secret weapon."
Hearing Elias Carter's company mentioned, Preston's dark brows immediately knit together in a sharp frown.
Gabriel pressed on. "Are you worried her dad won't approve? But the Whitmore family is an incredible match for the Royces... We're more than qualified!"
This question had been driving Gabriel crazy for ages.
Yet every time he tried to bring it up, Preston would only offer vague non-answers before smoothly changing the subject.
Gabriel's instincts screamed that Preston was hiding something massive.
"Seriously, Preston..." Gabriel leaned heavily over the polished desk, his face dropping its usual playful demeanor.
"Are you shutting me out?"
Preston rolled his eyes, his gaze filled with a mix of deep exasperation and dry amusement.
"Since when did I ever give you the illusion that I cared about you?"
"Jerk!" Gabriel cursed, laughing despite himself.
"You just don't trust me, do you? You never let me in on anything."
Preston knew Gabriel was just being nosy, but underneath it all, his brother genuinely cared. However, there were some dark secrets that Preston couldn't afford to drag innocent bystanders like Gabriel into—at least not until he had absolute proof.
