Gabriel Whitmore stayed a night at the Horizon Grand Hotel in Quillborne City, Quarevia.
Originally, he traveled to Quarevia purely for business. Had Elara Bennett not tricked him into meeting at the club's pool, he would have already flown home.
However, since he couldn't book a flight at a convenient time, Gabriel figured this might be fate's arrangement.
He tossed and turned on the massive hotel bed.
"Ugh, I seriously talk too much..."
Even now, Gabriel was agonizing over the fact that he shouldn't have said so much to Elara.
Preston Whitmore's figure involuntarily surfaced in his mind.
He remembered that day in the Stellaris PharmaTech office. Preston had subtly hinted that the death of Melanie Royce's biological mother was connected to Stellaris.
Preston's tone hadn't been entirely certain at the time. Perhaps Preston didn't want to admit it himself, or perhaps there was simply a massive misunderstanding.
Gabriel suddenly sat bolt upright in bed.
"My brother said... four years ago, there was an experimental cold medicine project. My sister-in-law's mother was the lead researcher... and she died in a car crash right here in Quillborne City during the project's development..."
Gabriel sat cross-legged on the mattress, muttering to himself.
"No matter how you look at it, how does that have anything to do with Stellaris?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, he slapped his forehead.
"Damn it! Wait a minute... aren't I in Quillborne City right now?"
His realization had taken a trip around the globe and back. Only now did it finally dawn on Gabriel that he was in the exact same city where Melanie's mother had met her tragic end.
"If... I can help my brother prove that her mother's death had nothing to do with Stellaris..."
Gabriel stroked his chin, his expression brightening into a triumphant smirk.
"Does that mean they can get married tomorrow?"
His eyes widened with excitement. The more he pictured it, the more thrilled he became, leaving him entirely sleepless for the rest of the night.
Averin.
As expected, Evelyn Hale's trial for the attempted murder of Everett Kingsley officially commenced.
Back then, in a moment of impulsive foolishness, he convinced himself that marrying Evelyn would guarantee Melanie a stable and happy marriage with Dominic.
And the result?
It only fueled Evelyn's murderous intent toward him.
He was lucky that the brutal beatings in the Marlowe District had left him mentally impaired. Not only did it save his life, but his lack of awareness spared him from the agonizing reality of living in a waking hell.
Ultimately, he had crossed paths with Melanie again, and she had been the one to save him.
His self-righteous sacrifice hadn't brought Melanie a single ounce of happiness.
Instead, Melanie had helped him time and time again.
She brought him back to Averin, helped him regain his memory and intellect, and handed him the evidence he needed to take Evelyn down.
Now that Evelyn was completely ruined, Everett didn't feel a shred of vindication.
Instead, a suffocating wave of despair washed over him. He felt utterly, completely useless.
