...What?"
Preston's words left Melanie completely utterly baffled.
"What are you talking about? When did I ever bring another man into our home?"
She tilted her head, her mind racing with confusion.
If he was talking about 'our home,' he meant their apartment at Rosevale Heights.
She furrowed her brow in deep thought before it suddenly dawned on her.
"Preston! Did you have someone spying on me?!"
Realizing he had just sparked her temper all over again, Preston quickly grabbed a bottle of water from the console and handed it to her.
"Honey, please calm down, okay?"
As he spoke, he twisted the cap off and gently brought the rim to her lips.
"You think a bottle of water is going to buy my forgiveness?"
She scoffed, playing hard to get.
"Then... should I feed it to you from my mouth?"
Preston's suggestive murmur nearly made her choke on her own saliva.
She snatched the bottle and took a long, greedy gulp.
The cool water quenched her thirst and managed to douse a bit of her fiery anger.
Seeing her expression soften slightly, Preston began his explanation.
Naturally, he couldn't reveal that he was actually the CEO of Stellaris PharmaTech, nor could he confess that Philip was his executive assistant.
However, his intention in leaving Philip there had genuinely been to protect her, not monitor her.
"That designated driver I hired for you was actually a private security guard... Dominic was at the gala, and he wouldn't stop harassing you. I couldn't stop worrying. Later... the guard told me he was watching over you from a distance and saw... Everett Kingsley follow you into the building. He didn't come back out until after two in the morning..."
As Preston spoke, his brows knit together, his eyes flashing with raw jealousy and vulnerability.
Now Melanie finally understood why his face had been so thunderous when he picked her up after work.
Realizing she wasn't the only one consumed by jealousy, her mood improved dramatically.
"I know... you and Everett are friends, and having a friend over isn't a crime. But... please, next time, don't do it late at night, and don't do it when I'm not home... okay?"
Normally, Preston possessed an aura so dominant it was almost terrifying, yet right now, he was practically pleading with her.
The sheer contrast was undeniably endearing to her.
"What if I told you... I never let Everett into our apartment at all. Would you believe me?"
Her words made Preston freeze.
Without missing a beat, Melanie pulled out her phone, dialed a number, and put it on speaker.
"Everett? Are you awake?"
"Yeah, I'm up. What's wrong?"
"Did you leave Rosevale Heights at two in the morning last night?"
"Yeah... wait, how did you know that?"
"Never mind how I know. Didn't you drop me off and leave right away? Why were you there so late?"
