At Phoebe's mockery, Everett's face burned crimson.
His suit really wasn't expensive.
It was just an off-the-rack, budget brand.
Since he had only just become COO, he only owned one custom-tailored suit. Terrified of ruining it during the trip, he had packed it safely in his suitcase, intending to change right before the gala.
He hadn't expected...
to be humiliated by a competitor the moment they checked in.
A bitter feeling swelled in his chest as he ducked his head.
"What, lost your voice already?"
Phoebe crossed her arms, looking entirely too smug.
"If you don't want to be mocked, at least dress the part! You look like some country bumpkin wandering into the city. Even if you don't care about humiliating yourself, you should at least consider the reputation of your hosts!"
Her loud insults quickly drew the attention of the other guests in the lobby.
"Who are they? I don't recognize them."
"I think they're from Averin... some pharmaceutical company."
"Right... the Royce Group, I believe."
"Oh, I've heard of them. But what are they doing here? Did the Carter Group invite them?"
"They must have. They have invitations, but as far as I know, their companies have no mutual business."
"Then why were they invited?"
"No idea. But that guy really is dressed cheaply. Is he an assistant?"
"Ms. Thorne said he's their new COO."
Another ripple of snickers echoed through the crowd, making Everett's face burn even hotter.
Keeping his head down, he turned to leave, but Melanie grabbed his arm.
"Where are you going?"
He muttered under his breath.
