Although Jordan Brooks directed that sentence only at Elias, Melanie was standing right there and heard it too.
She was a bit taken aback.
A seven or eight-year-old girl...
Looking for her?
Searching her memory, Melanie knew a few four or five-year-olds, but she couldn't recall knowing any seven or eight-year-old girls.
Moreover, this was the venue for the Carter Group's annual gala.
Even if a little girl needed to see her, how on earth would she find her way to a place like this?
Melanie had no idea what was going on, but an inexplicable wave of unease washed over her.
After listening to Jordan's report, Elias relayed the situation to Melanie.
"Do you want to go out and see? Or... should I come with you?"
Elias dropped his playful demeanor, his expression turning serious.
Melanie waved her hand dismissively.
"No need. Since she's looking for me, I'll go by myself. It's just a child, what could possibly happen?"
Offering a reassuring smile, Melanie turned and headed toward the venue's exit.
Everett had instinctively wanted to accompany her.
But Elias had beaten him to the punch by asking first.
Since Melanie hadn't wanted Elias to go with her, it stood to reason she wouldn't want him there either.
Everett hesitated, his feet rooted to the spot, and he didn't follow.
Melanie walked out of the gala hall alone.
Right near the reception desk, she spotted the young girl, Lily Miller.
Lily was about seven or eight years old, with a radiant complexion and dressed in a pastel pink wool set. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary about her.
Except for the large black document folder clutched in her hands.
However, Melanie definitely didn't recognize this Lily Miller.
Searching her memories, she drew a complete blank.
A sense of suspicion crept in, and she wondered if the girl had the wrong person.
