Gabriel asked cautiously, but directly.
Meeting his gaze, Melanie honestly couldn't detect a hint of deceit or evasion in his clear eyes.
Lowering her gaze slightly, she took a sip of the Americano the waiter had just brought over.
"You were right, Vice President Whitmore, this coffee is excellent."
Gabriel pursed his lips, feeling certain she was deliberately changing the subject.
The atmosphere at their table grew far too quiet, clashing entirely with the bustling noise of Kingsland Square.
After a moment, Melanie finally spoke.
"You've misunderstood me, Vice President Whitmore. I have no intention of drawing a line with Stellaris PharmaTech. If I really wanted to distance myself, I wouldn't have agreed to collaborate on this new diabetes drug project, right?"
Hearing her explanation, Gabriel stroked his chin, feeling it made some sense.
"Then why have you been so cold to me all of a sudden?"
Hearing his muttered question, Melanie fabricated an excuse.
"It's not that I want to cut ties with Stellaris PharmaTech... I just don't want to get too close to you personally..."
"Why?"
Gabriel asked, his eyes wide.
Melanie offered a faint smile.
"Because my secretary warned me that your reputation in the romance department isn't exactly stellar, and advised me to be careful."
Hearing this, Gabriel instantly relaxed.
"Oh, so that's what this is about! I thought it was something major, you scared me to death... Let me tell you, Sister—ahem, Ms. Royce..."
Gabriel suddenly put on a dead serious expression, looking determined to swear an oath.
"I, Gabriel Whitmore, swear on my character that no matter how wild I play the field out there, I don't have a single ounce of that kind of interest in you."
"To me, you barely even count as a woman..."
